NMU Department of Music presents the NMU Symphonic Band & Wind Ensemble's first concert of the Winter '24 semester! Join us in Reynolds Recital Hall on Monday evening, February 26 for what is sure to be a lovely performance.

The concert begins at 7:30 p.m. and admission is free for everyone.

Under the direction of Erin Colwitz and Jared Anderson, NMU and Michigan Tech Choirs join together in song to benefit local St. Vincent de Paul conferences. For more information, visit the Department of Music website.

As the first concert of our Siril Concert Series for the 2023-2024 school year, NMU Department of Music welcomes you to Reynolds Recital Hall for An Evening At The Opera! Join us on Friday, September 8 at 7:30 p.m. for a concert that will feature guest artists Tara Jamshidian (soprano) and Adam Lowe (tenor) in brilliant vocal performances you're sure to enjoy.

NMU Orchestra is back for their second concert of the semester on Thursday, November 30, but this time with the NMU Jazz Band! Our outstanding NMU Orchestra and NMU Jazz Band perform in Reynolds Recital Hall at 7:30 p.m. Admission is free!

Jazz returns to Reynolds Recital Hall--this time from the NMU Jazz Combos! This concert takes place on Wednesday, November 29 at 7:30 p.m. and is free for everyone.

The NMU Percussion Ensemble, under the direction of Professor James A. Strain, will present its annual fall semester concert on Saturday, November 4, 2023 at 3:00 p.m., in Reynolds Recital Hall. The concert will be performed on standard percussion instruments such as drums, cymbals, gongs, marimbas, xylophones, bells, vibraphones, chimes and timpani. The music will include a variety of musical styles, such as Hip-Hop, World Beat, and classical transcriptions of music from Tchaikovsky’s suite from The Nutcracker and Symphony No. 4, Khachaturian’s Sabre Dance, and William Byrds’ Ave Verum Corpus. There is no admission charge, and the concert will also be live-streamed by the NMU School of Music, Theater, and Dance Broadcasting Network (subscription required), which can be found at https://smtdbroadcasting.nmu.edu.

NMU Department of Music presents the NMU Jazz Ensembles in their first concert of the fall semester! Join us in Reynolds Recital Hall at 7:30 p.m. for performances from the NMU Jazz Band and Jazz Combo. Admission is free and open to the public.

AUDITIONS are Wednesday, Jan. 18th from 4:00-7:00pm at the Reynolds Recital Hall. The NMU orchestra is open to all NMU students, staff, high school students, and community members with a background in performance. Auditions are primarily for Dr. Rhyneer to make informed seating arrangements, and to personally connect with you and to retrieve contact information.

Sign up for an audition time on the bulletin board across from Thomas Fine Arts room 102; You can also show up backstage anytime between 4-7pm on the 18th- and we will fit you in.

· Prepare: 1) 60 second solo or etude which displays your ability, 2) a  4 bar excerpt on the TFA bulletin board

· Submit: a personnel form (on the TFA bulletin board), or fill one out at the audition

REGISTER: Everyone is asked to register for the class:

· MU116 for .5 credit 

· MU116A for 0 credit (if you are at your credit limit) Please email Dr. Rhyneer to get added

SCHEDULE: Rehearsals take place 5:00-6:50 Mondays and Wednesdays during the NMU semester (no rehearsals 3/6 and 3/8) at the Reynolds Recital Hall. The first meeting will be Monday, January 23rd.

CONCERTS:

• Wednesday, March 1st 6:30pm; Children’s Concert-featuring the Children’s Museum celebrity auction winner, conductor Sonia Stucco, Reynolds Recital Hall
• Wednesday, April 26th 7:30pm; Final Concert- featuring Danzon No. 2 by Marquez (pending rental availability), Reynolds Recital Hall

LOCKERS/PRACTICE ROOMS: TFA 1A

· Sign out a locker for your instrument at the Music Department Office TFA (Thomas Fine Arts) room 102 

· First come, first serve practice rooms are available to non-majors on floor 1A
