The Northern Michigan University Freshman Fellowship Program invites academically qualified and highly motivated students to apply. To be eligible to apply for participation in the Freshman Fellowship Program, you must be considered a first-year student, have a 2.5 or higher cumulative high school grade point average (GPA), and be accepted to NMU (www.nmu.edu/apply) before completing this application.

Have your NMU Identification Number (NMU IN) and high school GPA available before beginning. Your NMU Identification Number is included in your acceptance letter. This number is required for your submission to be considered.

The last component of the application asks you to write three short essays in which you explain why you want to be a Fellow, the area of research in which you would like to be involved; what experiences and skills you could bring to assisting a faculty mentor; and a summary of faculty you want to work with and why. You may want to write this using a word processor first, then copy and paste your response into the provided text box. *Failure to answer all the questions will result in your application not being considered.*

To complete your application, please provide answers to the following questions. Applications are accepted until 11:59pm (Eastern Time) on Monday, February 17, 2025. If you experience technical difficulties with the application, please contact us via email at freshmanfellows@nmu.edu.

Complete applications will be reviewed, and applicants will be notified in early March.

NMU Research Information

The information you provide here will be used to match you with an appropriate faculty mentor. Because faculty are approached based on student research interests, we ask that students be flexible and imaginative with their research interests. Once a student has been accepted into the Freshman Fellowship Program, continued participation in the Program is contingent upon whether or not a match can be made between a student and faculty mentor.

Please visit the link below to see a list of faculty research interests. This is not a comprehensive list but an example of possible research areas. We also encourage you to visit academic department websites, individual professor's websites, and other professional platforms to learn more about faculty and their research interests.

Please note: This part of the application survey will be shared with NMU faculty and staff. Please make sure your responses are free of grammatical and writing errors, as your writing ability and attention to detail are also factors in determining if you're a strong applicant.
