Independent study under the supervision of a member of the department. Supervisor and study must be selected prior to enrollment in the course and appropriate directed study forms must be completed. The content of the course does not duplicate existing course content.
The student develops a thesis with the help of a thesis committee. Appropriate thesis forms must be completed prior to enrollment. The thesis must be approved by the thesis committee and the Office of Graduate Education. The student should consult the department and the Office of Graduate Education for specific requirements.

Supervised practical work at a newspaper, public relations agency or in a related field. Work is assigned and directly supervised by participating agency, with the student reporting regularly to a faculty member, who also grades the student’s performance.

- Prerequisites: Enrollment in an English graduate program, successful completion of 24 program credits, approval of advisor and Director of English Graduate Studies.
The student will prepare, under the direction of their advisor, a portfolio of at least two exemplary works of scholarly or professional writing within their chosen concentration. The portfolio should be a minimum of 30 pages. Papers may be new works or revisions of previously written papers.

The student will write an essay suitable for publication under the guidance of a faculty director. The essay topic and scope must be approved by the capstone director and the English Graduate Studies Committee. Appropriate capstone forms must be approved at least one semester prior to final submission. The student should consult with the department and the College of Graduate Studies for specific requirements.

Directed study in creative writing, under the supervision of a member of the MFA writing faculty; or independent study in literature, under the supervision of a member of the graduate faculty. Supervisor and study must be selected prior to enrollment in the course and appropriate directed study forms must be completed.
Thesis hours are designed to give the student time to develop and complete a single thesis writing project. Requires regular consultation with the thesis director and readers.

This course will be used to meet the specific needs of teachers in Upper Peninsula school systems.

For capstone option 2 - Project: A continuation of MA 589. At the conclusion of the course, a written project must be submitted; subject to the approval of the student’s graduate committee.
For capstone option 3 - Actuarial Project: A continuation of MA 580. At the conclusion of the course, the verified passing of two internal or external professional actuarial exams not already passed; subject to the approval of the student’s graduate committee.
The student should consult the Mathematics and Computer Science department and the College of Graduate Studies and Research for specific requirements.
