The What Does Juneteenth Mean to Me? contest invites NMU students, faculty, staff, alumni, and community members to reflect on the historical and cultural significance of Juneteenth through creative expression.
Winning submissions will be showcased during the Week of Jubilee celebrations and may be featured in NMU’s Juneteenth Art Showcase or across university platforms.

How To Enter
1. Complete the online submission form – HERE
2. Upload your work in the appropriate file format:
- Essay: .pdf, .docx
- Visual Art: .jpg, .png, .pdf
- Video/Speech: .mp4, .mov, .mp3
3. Submit before the deadline: MAY 15, 2025
Submission Categories
Essay – A written reflection (maximum 1,000 words)
Visual Art – Painting, drawing, photography, digital design, etc.
Recorded Speech/Video – A 3-5 minute recorded spoken-word piece, monologue, or presentation
Eligibility
This contest is open to all NMU students, faculty, staff, alumni, and community members.
Prizes & Recognition
Winning entries will be featured during the Week of Jubilee and may be highlighted on NMU’s website and social media. Selected works will also be displayed at the Juneteenth Art Showcase on Friday, June 20, 2025 at Ore Dock Brewing Co.
