Student Awards
Each year, the Department of Languages, Literatures and International Studies honors two Outstanding Graduate Awards during our winter semester graduate reception. Eligible graduates are invited to apply for these awards, and applicants are reviewed by our esteemed faculty. Our department is pleased to recognize and commend these students who have demonstrated involvement in language and/or international activities throughout their academic career. Activities could include language clubs, student organizations, study abroad, tutoring, teaching, hosting international students, or service activities.
International Studies Outstanding Graduates
Students majoring in International Studies are eligible to be recognized for this award.
Languages Outstanding Graduates
Students majoring in Spanish, French, or German Studies are eligible to be recognized for this award.
Lippert Named Outstanding Graduating Senior
"Jakob Lippert of Green Bay, Wis., was awarded one of two Outstanding Graduating Senior awards from the Northern Michigan University Board of Trustees. He also won the Library and Archives Research Award for a paper on the Associated Press and Nazi Germany. Lippert will graduate with full honors April 30, earning a bachelor's degree in history and a minor in German studies."
2025-26 Student Achievement Awards
Congratulations to the Student Achievement Award recipients, including LLIS students and language tutors Halle Johnson and Summer Morrison! Halle Johnson, a double major in biology (botany concentration) and French, received the Outstanding Graduating Senior Award. Summer Morrison received the Outstanding Graduate of Any Class Standing Award. Morrison is a Secondary Education Integrated Science major and is pursuing minors in Secondary Education Chemistry and Deaf Studies.
Crossman Earns Fellowship to Study in Germany
"Northern Michigan University senior Elise Crossman is one of 65 students nationwide selected to receive a highly competitive fellowship through the Congress Bundestag Youth Exchange for Young Professionals (CBYX). After graduating in early May, she will spend the 2026-2027 academic year in Germany studying, interning and living with hosts on a cultural immersion program. The accounting and international studies major from Charlotte, Mich., is the second NMU recipient in two years."
Locke in Germany for Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange for Young Professionals Program
"Northern Michigan University alumna Lindsey Locke is one of 65 Americans selected to study and work in Germany for a year as part of the Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange (CBYX) for Young Professionals program. About 420 U.S. applicants representing a variety of career fields and locations vied for a spot in the prestigious program, now in its 42nd year. Locke graduated with a double major in International Studies and Spanish."
2009-2010 Study Abroad Awards
French Award
Carley Sukhbir studied abroad in Paris, France, through ISA for the summer 2010 semester.
German Award
Ryan Haskell studied abroad in Vienna, Austria, on a faculty-led program with Prof. Carol Strauss from Languages, Literatures and International Studies and Prof. Robert Goodrich from the History department during the summer 2010 semester.
Spanish Award
Jamie Laurie studied abroad in Guanajuato, Mexico, on a faculty-led program with Prof. Michael Joy during the summer 2010 semester.
Faculty and Staff Awards
Excellence-in-Service Award - Sam Marier
The Northern Michigan University Excellence-in-Service Award was presented to Samantha Marier on April 8, 2026, in recognition of her distinguished performance, dedication, and service in furthering the goals and values of the university. Sam serves as the principal administrative assistant for the Department of Languages, Literatures and International Studies and the Honors Program.
Excellence in Teaching Award - Dr. Z.Z. Lehmberg
In 2025, Dr. Z.Z. Lehmberg received the Excellence in Teaching Award, which recognizes the excellence in teaching of Northern Michigan University full-time faculty.
Technology Innovation Award for Faculty - Dr. Nelly Kupper
In 2024, Dr. Nelly Kupper received the Technology Innovation Award for Faculty, which recognizes exemplary faculty use of technology in the areas of teaching, research, and community service.
Students' Choice Award Commencement Speaker - Dr. Rebecca Ulland
In 2021, Dr. Rebecca Ulland was chosen by the students to be the commencement speaker for the December graduation.
Excellence in Leadership Award - Dr. Rebecca Ulland
In 2020, Dr. Rebecca Ulland, our department head, received the Excellence in Leadership Award. This award recognizes and honors Northern Michigan University faculty, including department heads, for exceptional leadership contributions to the campus and the broader community.
Excellence in Teaching Award - Dr. Jon Sherman
In 2019, Dr. Jon Sherman received the Excellence in Teaching Award, which recognizes the excellence in teaching of Northern Michigan University full-time faculty.
The Stephen Young & Tricia Kinley Distinguished Faculty Award - Dr. Tim Compton
In 2013, Dr. Tim Compton received the The Stephen Young & Tricia Kinley Distinguished Faculty Award. This award recognizes and honors full-time faculty, including academic department heads, who have made significant professional contributions to Northern Michigan University and their professional areas.
Excellence in Teaching Award - Dr. Michael Joy
In 2012, Dr. Michael Joy received the Excellence in Teaching Award, which recognizes the excellence in teaching of Northern Michigan University full-time faculty.
