Z. Z. Lehmberg is a native of Guangzhou, China, where she began her teaching career as an English teacher at Peizheng Middle School at the age of 17. Then at the age of 20, she came to the U.S. to pursue her higher education. After a brief stint in the business world, Z. Z. realized that she was better suited for teaching and education. She has created and taught a variety of courses for the Department of English and Modern Languages and Literatures at NMU, such as TESOL Methods and Materials, World Literature in Translation – China, and Elementary Chinese I & II.

In addition to teaching courses in composition, pedagogy, literature, and language, Z. Z. is also actively involved in NMU’s internationalization efforts, helping connecting the university and Chinese educational institutions. In 2008 she was instrumental in securing a Fulbright Scholar-in-Residence grant for NMU to bring a traditional Chinese medicine doctor and kongfu master to campus. She also initiated the project that brought a Tibetan and Qiang art and folk craft exhibit to NMU’s Devos Museum (2010). Her teaching and service to the university are complemented by her scholarly interests and accomplishments. She has published autobiographical essays (U.S.-China Review), English translation of Chinese stories (Guangdong Education Publishing House) and poetry (Chinese American Forum), and articles on composition research and pedagogy (Technical Communication Quarterly).  She is also a frequent presenter at regional, national, and international conferences sponsored by professional organizations, such as College Composition and Communication (CCC), Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL), the International Writing Centers Association (IWCA), and the Midwest Writing Centers Association (MWCA).  Z. Z. often brings students to conferences to introduce them to the professional world beyond Northern Michigan University.

Z. Z. is married to Paul Lehmberg and they have two daughters, Freya and GlenEllen.
