About

Sigma Tau Delta (ΣTΔ) works to cultivate the next generation of literary scholars, educators, writers, and leaders through transformative undergraduate and graduate experiences. Founded in 1924, and with more than 35,000 members worldwide, ΣTΔ creates unparalleled opportunities for intellectual growth through academic conferences; publication opportunities; awards, grants, and scholarships; and mentorship networks that connect students with established professionals in English studies. Our members develop critical thinking, research skills, and creative expression through literary scholarship projects, creative writing workshops, and community literacy initiatives. The program’s comprehensive approach to professional development—including career guidance, graduate school preparation, community service, internships, and networking opportunities—has meant that our students become prize-winning writers, respected publishers, and excellent educators.

The Eta Phi chapter of Sigma Tau Delta was established in 1986 and has inducted almost 400 members in the last 20 years. We have won the Outstanding Chapter Award in 2025 and 1989. The NMU chapter holds a book discussion on each year’s Common Reader; in 2026 the Common Reader selection is Salvage the Bones by Jesmyn Ward. Members submit essays and creative works to the annual convention and accepted works are presented each spring. In addition, members organize literary activities on campus and in the community that forward our mission of promoting English; for example, writing retreats, writing marathons, the Dead Writers Reading, the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards, youth activities, movie nights, and more.
