Masterpieces of the Golden Age of Spanish Literature

SN 425 Masterpieces of the Golden Age of Spanish Literature 4 cr.

Students examine some of the masterpieces of Spain’s Golden Age literature. They will learn about historical, political, economic, social and cultural contexts of societies that produced the texts and will improve their abilities to critically read and analyze literary works.

Contemporary Latin American Culture (Honors)

SN 314H Contemporary Latin American Culture (Honors) 4 cr. The content of this course is similar to SN 314, with additional original research and community outreach. Additional travel component may be required. Notes:

SN 314H is taught in English. This course cannot be applied toward a Spanish major or minor.

Contemporary Latin American Culture

SN 314 Contemporary Latin American Culture 4 cr.

Presentation of Latin American intellectual, social and political issues as reflected in contemporary literature, music, art, film and other cultural forms from the various regions of Latin America.

Notes:

SN 314 is taught in English. This course cannot be applied toward a Spanish major or minor.

Introduction to Spanish America

SN 312 Introduction to Spanish America 4 cr. This course is a multidisciplinary introduction to the culture and civilization of Spanish America. It offers a comprehensive view of the historical, geographical, political and economic factors that have helped shape today’s Spanish American societies and the cultural expressions which have resulted. Notes:

SN 312 is taught in Spanish.

Introduction to Spanish Civilization and Culture

SN 310 Introduction to Spanish Civilization and Culture 4 cr.

This course is a multidisciplinary introduction to the culture and civilization of Spain. It offers a comprehensive view of the historical, geographical, political and economic factors that have helped shape today’s Spanish society.

Notes:

SN 310 is taught in Spanish.

Apprenticeship

SN 299 Apprenticeship 1-2 cr. Apprentice work and activities that require students to use their knowledge of Spanish and develop their competency in the language. This includes such things as oral expression, appreciation of grammatical structure, proofreading and editing skills, research skills in Spanish and skills in teaching Spanish to others. Notes:

May be taken for a maximum of two credits.

Intermediate Spanish II

SN 202 Intermediate Spanish II 4 cr.

SN 202 is a continuation of SN 201. Students do considerably more reading and writing than in prior courses. The course expands their cultural and linguistic proficiency.

Notes:

Students should pass SN 201 with a "C" or better or three years of high school Spanish prior to this course. Students may take the language placement exam for concerns about proper placement. Contact mll@nmu.edu with questions.

Intermediate Spanish I

SN 201 Intermediate Spanish I 4 cr.

SN 201 reviews all grammar and major topics from SN 101 and 102. This course incorporates more reading, writing and conversation than first-year courses and explores more matters dealing with Hispanic cultures. Students expand their proficiency into areas such as expressing opinions and persuading.

Notes:

Students should pass SN 102 with a "C" or better or two years of high school Spanish prior to this course. Students may take the language placement exam for concerns about proper placement. Contact mll@nmu.edu with questions.

Elementary Spanish II

SN 102 Elementary Spanish II 4 cr.

SN 102 is a continuation of SN 101. Students add to their proficiency in matters such as those related to health, free time, employment, travel and talking about the past cultures of the Hispanic world.

Students should pass SN 101 with a "C" or better or one year of high school Spanish prior to this course. Students may take the language placement exam for concerns about proper placement. Contact mll@nmu.edu with questions.
