This course will provide students exposure to a fusion of traditional coaching theory, sport psychology, and positive psychology, providing students a scientifically and philosophically sound way to teach athletes how to complete and perform their very best on a consistent basis.

ASP 530 Foundations of Sport Performance 3 cr.  (3-0-0)

This course will address the physiological foundations of sport performance. It will include topics that address exercise physiology, exercise programing, strength and conditioning and biomechanics for sport performance. This course is designed to fulfill the AASP-CMPC K3- Sport Science Requirement.

This course is designed to facilitate the understanding and development of advanced principles in the field of athletic coaching. Particular emphasis in this course will be placed on the development of effective communication skills, management of team dynamics and athlete-centered coaching. These content areas will be examined through a transformational lens to encourage future leaders in sport to use the athletic platform to enhance the participants’ lives in sport and beyond.

ASP 550 Theory of Sport 3 cr.  (3-0-0)

This course is designed to help students develop their knowledge and understanding of the dynamics of their chosen sport. The student will research the past and present-day era of the game both through coaching philosophy and scheme. The principles of the sport from offense,
defense, special teams (plays), strategy, individual skills, recruiting, rules, and regulations will be researched and analyzed.

ASP 570 Applying Research in Sport for Improved Performance 3 cr.  (3-0-0)

This course is designed to educate students on how to locate and analyze scholarly work in the field of applied sport psychology and coaching education. Students will learn about qualitative and quantitative data collection and analysis while preparing a research proposal. This course will meet the requirements for K6-Research Methods and Statistics as part of the AASP-CMPC requirements.

ASP 590 Capstone in Positive Coaching 2 cr.  (2-0-0)

This course is designed to culminate the positive coaching emphasis in the M.S. in Applied Sport Psychology for students in the “positive coaching” emphasis. Students will critically examine their own coaching / sport experience and draw on the material from this course and the entire program to create systems for continued coaching improvement and growth. Students will complete a semester project in this course which is designing a coaching plan.
