Michael Brown Headshot

Meet Michael Brown, a 2005 BS Political Science alumnus and veteran from Davisburg, MI. Michael currently resides in Lafayette Hill, PA where he works with veterans who are getting out of the military and looking to use their VA Benefits to attend college at Villanova University.

When I first graduated I worked for the first Iraq War veteran to ever get elected to Congress, and in that role I learned so much about myself and my place in it. After that, I wound up back in higher education, this time as an employee, as I work with veterans like myself who are getting out of the military and looking to use their VA Benefits.

I work with student veterans and other military-connected students as they transition to being a civilian. In this role, I connect students to the broader university, the community, and to a vast network of people. Our goal is to align services and resources to our students so that they can be successful in the classroom and in their careers.

NMU was the best choice for me after the Army. I was afforded an opportunity to invest in myself, for the first time in my life really. Small classes, a tight community, and faculty members who truly cared, helped mold me into the person I am today. Dr. Nelson, Cherry, and Kulishek all pushed me to find my voice, and without those three specific people, I do not think I am telling this same story.

I would urge everyone to ask questions, get to know your professors, and to have fun. These years will be looked back on with great fondness, do not take them for granted.

Being a student-veteran, and a non-traditional student was initially tough for me, but the people on campus quickly made me feel welcome and a part of the community.
