BI 489 Graduate Assessment for Biology Majors 0 cr.

  • Co-requisites: Registration for graduation is required for enrollment.

All graduating students must take the major field test in biology as part of the Department of Biology outcomes assessment effort. The two hour test will be given at multiple times during each semester.

BI 491 Seminar 1 cr.

  • Prerequisites: Instructor’s permission and junior standing. Course prerequisites and a minimum grade point average may be required for some topics.

Variable content, depending on instructor. Students read extensively from periodical literature and meet weekly for reports and discussion.

  • Prerequisites: core courses in biology, junior standing and instructor permission at least one month before beginning of course.

An opportunity for qualified junior and senior students to conduct independent study other than independent scientific research projects.

BI 499 Internship 1-6 cr.
  • Offered: Contact department for information
  • Graded: S/U
  • Prerequisites: Status in good standing with a minimum grade point average of 2.50 and a major in biology, botany or zoology; appropriate background for subject of internship; adviser, department head and cooperating agency supervisor permission.

Practical experience under the supervision of an experienced biologist, in an academic, governmental or private setting. A written report incorporating an evaluation and critique of the internship experience will be required. A course subtitle on the student’s transcript will describe the particular content of this course.

Notes:

Application for internship must be made at the Biology Department office at least four weeks before the start of the internship. Field work may be required. Contact instructor for more information.

CH 105 Chemical Principles 4 cr.  (3-0-2)

  • Prerequisites: Math placement recommendation of MA 100 or a "C-" or better in MA 090.

Introduction to chemistry including contemporary applications and problems. Topics include states of matter, atomic and molecular structure, electrochemistry, energy, nuclear chemistry, organic and polymer chemistry.

Notes:

Does not count to a major or minor in chemistry.

CH 109 Introductory Organic and Biochemistry for the Health Sciences 4 cr.  (3-1-2)

  • Prerequisites: Math placement recommendation of MA 100 or a "C-" or better in MA 090 and proficiency in basic chemistry as determined by placement test.

An introduction to the different classes of organic molecules and their reactions which are applicable to biochemistry. Basic biochemical concepts including acid/base chemistry, structure and function of biomolecules and metabolic pathways which are involved in producing energy.

  • Prerequisites: Math placement score recommendation of MA 111 or grade of "C-" in MA 100, and one year of high school chemistry.

Survey of atomic structure, bonding, stoichiometry and the states of matter.

CH 112 General Chemistry II 5 cr.  (3-1-3)

  • Prerequisites: "C-" or better in CH 111.

Study of chemical equilibria and kinetics, thermodynamics, solution reactions, survey of the chemistry of the common elements and nuclear chemistry.

CH 189 Medicinal Plant Chemistry Seminar I 1 cr.  (1-0-0)

  • Prerequisites: CH 111 (or concurrent enrollment) or instructor permission.

Seminar course involving discussion of articles related to medicinal plant chemistry and presentations by peers and invited guests.

Notes:

This will be taken by students in their first year of the Medicinal Plant Chemistry program.

CH 215 Chemistry of the Elements 4 cr.  (3-0-3)

  • Prerequisites: "C-" or better in CH 112.

Descriptive chemistry of elements and their compounds with relation to the periodic table. Emphasis is placed on chemical behavior, bonding and structure as well as spectral, thermodynamic and electrochemical properties. Laboratory work consists of the synthesis and characterization of common elements and their compounds.

CH 220 Introduction to Organic Chemistry 5 cr.  (4-0-3)
  • Offered: Fall Winter
  • Prerequisites: "C-" or better in CH 112.

A one-semester course covering all aspects of organic chemistry including nomenclature, structure, optical activity, functional groups, spectra and syntheses. Emphasis on the organic compounds and reactions important to the function of living systems.

Notes:

Credit cannot be earned in both CH 220 and CH 315/CH 317 or CH 321.

CH 241 Chemical Equilibrium 3 cr.

  • Prerequisites: "C-" or better in CH 112.

Study of chemical equilibrium in water including ionization, solubility, acid-base phenomena, complex ion formation and oxidation-reduction reactions.

CH 242 Quantitative Analysis 2 cr.  (0-0-6)
  • Offered: Fall Winter
  • Prerequisites: "C-" or better in CH 112.

The principles and methods of quantitative analysis, including titrimetry, spectrophotometry and potentiometry are used to determine the composition of various materials and the physical constants of substances.

CH 315 Organic Chemistry I 3 cr.  (3-0-0)

  • Co-requisites: Pre- or Co-requisite: CH 317 Organic Chemistry Lab I. CH 316 (optional).
  • Prerequisites: "C-" or better in CH 112.

First semester foundational course in organic chemistry for science and pre-professional majors. Introduction to the fundamental concepts of organic molecular structure, functional groups, nomenclature, physical properties, isomerism, stereochemistry, conformations, acid-base reactions, and spectroscopy.

Notes:

Formerly CH 321 Organic Chemistry. Credit cannot be earned in both CH 220 and CH 315/CH 317. It is strongly recommended that students co-enroll in CH 316.

CH 316 Organic Chemistry I Discussion 1 cr.  (0-1-0)

  • Prerequisites: Must have a "C-" or better in CH 112.

Course will emphasize problem solving techniques and critical thinking in organic chemistry. The subject matter for this discussion-style course will directly parallel the material covered in CH 315.

CH 317 Organic Chemistry Laboratory I 1 cr.  (0-0-3)

  • Co-requisites: Pre- or Co-requisite: CH 315 Organic Chemistry I. CH 316 (optional).
  • Prerequisites: "C-" or better in CH 112.

Introduction to organic chemistry laboratory techniques including reaction methods, recrystallization, extraction, distillation, chromatography and spectroscopy.

Credit cannot be earned in both CH 220 and CH 315/CH 317.

Second semester foundational course in organic chemistry for science and pre-professional majors. Course builds on material from CH 315 and covers the reactivity and synthesis of organic molecules representing all major functional groups.
