OIS 185 Introductory Software Applications 4 cr.

Students develop basic skills in the operation of spreadsheet, database and presentation software. Competencies will include terminology and design, creation and editing of files.
OIS 244 Applied Business Communication 4 cr.
  • Offered: Fall Winter
Development and application of skills in producing oral and written business messages, including memorandums, letters, and reports. Not open to students who have completed MGT 344. Notes: It is recommended that students enroll in this course after completing EN 111 College Composition.
OIS 250 Desktop Publishing Principles 2 cr.
  • Offered: Fall Winter
This course will introduce students to desktop publishing, including the concepts of page layout and design. Students will work with single and multiple page documents, color, and graphics. The emphasis will be on the elements of design through hands-on applications.
OIS 261 Advanced Document Processing 4 cr.

  • Prerequisites: Grade of "C" or better in OIS 161.
This course enables students to further develop production skill in the use of word processing software programs. Students will develop proficiency in advanced word processing techniques used to produce a variety of business documents.
OIS 263 Business Document Editing 4 cr.

  • Prerequisites: OIS 161.

Emphasis is on grammar, usage and the chief elements of style: punctuation, number expression, capitalization, word choice, abbreviations, plurals and possessives. Students develop skill in processing text from oral to printed form by transcribing on the computer from recorded media or through the use of voice recognition software.

OIS 266 Medical Transcription 4 cr.

  • Prerequisites: Grade of "C" or better in OIS 161.

Students will apply and expand their knowledge of medical terminology while developing transcription abilities through the production of a variety of common medical reports. The transcription will cover a wide range of medical specialties.

OIS 271 Medical Office Procedures and Billing 4 cr.

A lecture/application course that emphasizes processing health information in ambulatory care settings including but not limited to physicians’ offices, outpatient surgery and medical clinics. Students will use office management and billing skills as they apply to the health care industry

OIS 273 Medical Coding 4 cr.

  • Prerequisites: Grade of "C" or better in OIS 270.

Development of entry-level medical diagnostic and procedural coding skills using current protocol, International Classification of Diseases, Clinical Modification (ICD-CM) and Current Procedural Terminology (CPT). Emphasis is placed on accurate and ethical coding practices as they affect reimbursement for health care.

A course dealing with office duties of special interest to the legal secretary. Proper client relationships and legal ethics are emphasized. Practical experience is provided in the preparation of various legal documents.
OIS 285 Advanced Software Applications and Integration 4 cr.

  • Prerequisites: Grade of "C" or better in OIS 161 and OIS 185.

Students further develop skills using spreadsheet and database software and develop skills integrating all components of an office suite including word processing, spreadsheet, database and presentation software.

OIS 293 Integrated Office 4 cr.

  • Prerequisites: Grade of "C" or better in OIS 161 and OIS 185.
Students reinforce and develop office skills through employment testing experiences, an office placement experience and comprehensive exit examinations. This is a capstone course for the associate degree programs and should be taken in the last semester of enrollment.
OIS 350 Methods and Materials in Teaching Business Education 4 cr.

  • Prerequisites: Admission to the methods phase of teacher education.
Orientation to the field of business education with attention to objectives, procedures, instructional materials and evaluation, as well as to keyboarding/typewriting, accounting, basic business subjects, economics, marketing, management, information technologies and office procedures/office block courses. Notes: May not be applied toward a non-teaching major or any minor in the College of Business.
OIS 450 Advanced Desktop Publishing 3 cr.

This course builds on Beginning and Intermediate Desktop Publishing. Students produce printed materials including brochures, newsletters, flyers and other communication documents in camera-ready format for publication and distribution. Emphasis will be on understanding the printing process, planning the printed piece, design for effective communication and the use of color.

Coordinated work experience providing up-to-date skills in the area of specialization. Work experience evaluated for vocational endorsement. Each hour of work will apply as five hours toward vocational endorsement.

PBW 101 Applied Natural Wellness Retail 4 cr.  (4-0-0)

This course provides a foundation of plant wellness with the overall goal of applying this knowledge in a retail or other applied wellness setting. This course provides students the skills needed to summarize herbal safety and efficacy. Students will understand the legal issues related to discussing in a retail environment the effects of applying and ingesting herbs and other plants and will be able to convey their knowledge to customers in an accommodating, respectful way.

PBW 111 Fundamentals of Natural Wellness 4 cr.  (4-0-0)

Fundamentals of Natural Wellness serves as an overview of plant-based wellness. Students will be introduced to a variety of topics, including plant wellness history, how various cultures used plants for better health, and how to evaluate available plant products. Business opportunities in the field of natural wellness, such as horticulture, plant processing, and distribution will also be featured.

PBW 121 Wellness Plants: Uses & Effects 4 cr.  (4-0-0)

This course will examine ways plant-based substances can impact well-being. Topics will include
wellness-based plants, specific active ingredients within these plants, and synthetic analogs of plant
ingredients. The course will introduce the relationship of plant application or ingestion to changes in
the nervous system and how these actions might affect mental functioning and behavior. An emphasis
will be on teaching students how to find and summarize published articles in this area of study.

PBW 131 Plant Wellness Customer Service 4 cr.  (4-0-0)

This course will prepare students to communicate plant properties clearly in a plant-based
wellness retail environment. Students will learn effective communication, active listening, and
emotional intelligence to promote positive front-line customer relationships. This course will
provide students with a foundational, applied understanding of growing and developing plants
for use in natural wellness sectors. It includes a brief overview of seed germination, soil and
water management, plant anatomy, growing, and harvesting techniques.

PBW 289 Graduation Assessment for Cannabis and Plant-Based Wellness Operations 0 cr.

All graduating majors must take an exit assessment for the Cannabis and Plant-Based Wellness Operations A.A.S. as part of the program's outcomes assessment efforts. This assessment will be given in the final semester for all graduating students. Students must enroll in this course concurrently with graduation registration.
