CN 107 Construction Documents 3 cr.  (2-0-2)

The study and interpretation of various construction contract documents including plans, specifications and construction manuals. Sample sets of documents are interpreted and developed using computer applications with word processing.
CN 152 Codes and Inspection 2 cr.  (2-0-0)

This course introduces students to basic requirements and processes for compliance with building codes and ordinances. It also provides a general understanding of the relationships and procedures for various regulatory agencies associated with different compliance requirements; including, but not limited to, plan review and inspection processes.

CN 152m Michigan Residential Building Codes 1 cr.  (1-0-0)

This course introduces students to basic requirements and processes for compliance with building codes and ordinances with regards to Michigan Residential Building Codes. It also provides a general understanding of the relationships and procedures for various regulatory agencies associated with different compliance requirements; including, but not limited to, plan review and inspection processes.

This course is required if a student wants to earn a pre-licensure certificate for the Michigan Residential Builders License.

CN 156 Construction Systems and Methods 3 cr.  (2-0-2)

  • Prerequisites: CN 107 and CN 110.

This course is designed to introduce the student to basic building systems and the different means and methods constructing those systems. It utilizes both classroom lecture and lab to help students gain practical knowledge of the different systems.

CN 278 Mechanical, Electrical and Plumbing Systems 3 cr.  (2-0-2)

  • Prerequisites: CN 107.

This course provides a fundamental understanding of construction and design procedures for mechanical, electrical, plumbing, fire suppression, and controls systems. Developing and understanding necessary terminology in each of these systems is a primary concentration of the course.

CN 283 Construction Estimating 3 cr.  (3-0-0)

  • Prerequisites: CN 107.

Introduction to estimating, using means and national reporting systems as a guide. Students are provided with theory, principles and techniques to arrive at a total construction cost for a building project.

CN 289 Graduate Assessment for Building Technology Majors 0 cr.

  • Co-requisites: Graduation registration (CA000).

All graduating majors must take the major field test in building technology as
part of the Building Technology Program Outcomes Assessment effort. This two
hour test will be given in the final semester for all graduating students. Students must enroll for this course as a co-requisite for graduation registration as a graduation requirement.

Selection of problem in area of emphasis, specialized instruction and experiences to reinforce technical skill and knowledge. Written reports of work are required.
CN 353 Soils, Foundations and Structures 3 cr.  (3-0-0)

Study of basic theory and application detailed in ASTM (American Society of Testing Materials) procedures, developing a knowledge of fundamental principles and good judgment in foundation design supported by experience and scientific data, as well as the relationship between soil types and their impact on building structural systems.

Utilizing today’s standards to better understand and manage the personal and environmental hazards presented by the construction industry.

In-depth orientation to construction management methods, major engineering and construction management techniques and practices relating to the organization of a company.
