Cybersecurity

The Upper Peninsula Cybersecurity Institute (UPCI) at NMU is the only facility of its kind in the U.P. and one of six statewide. The institute offers non-degree and industry credentials relevant to emerging careers in cybersecurity.

Grief Support Specialist Program

The Grief Support Specialist Program is a non-credit certificate program through Continuing Education and Workforce Development at NMU. This program evolved from the Grief Specialist Program at UW-Madison.

The Grief Support Specialist Program is an online, 8 week, non-credit certificate program through Continuing Education and Workforce Development at NMU. This program evolved from the Grief Specialist Program at UW-Madison.

Participants will learn the principles and many practical tools and techniques to enhance their professional and personal life related to grief. 

Courses will be held via zoom on eight consecutive Mondays from 6:00pm-9:00pm EST, beginning on April 22, 2024

Note: Doug’s sessions will all be pre-recorded.

 Attendance is required for all eight training sessions.

NMU CEWD and Pathfinder Maritime have teamed up to make earning a maritime license simple and easy! Completing one of these National Maritime Center (NMC) approved programs is the first step in earning your professional maritime license and advancing your career. 

MAIN COURSE OFFERINGS

  • OUPV/Six-Pack: An Operator of Uninspected Vessel (OUPV) license allows its holder to carry up to six passengers-for-hire. This is the perfect license for fishing guides, sailing tours, and others.
  • 100 Ton Master: A 100 Ton Master license allows you to operate inspected vessels up to 100 Tons while carrying more than six passengers. Use this license to captain ferries, research vessels, small cruise ships, and others.
  • 200 Ton Mate/Master: This course allows you to serve as the Mate or Master (depending on your experience) of a vessel up to 200 Tons.
  • Able Seaman: An Able Seaman credential is a great license for those advancing their maritime careers. This credential allows its holders to serve as a watch-stander, lead the deck department, and a variety of other responsibilities. 

Enrollment begins March 2023. Optional in-person training and NMC licensing assistance will be held May 12-13, September 2023, and additional future dates.

This program is approved by the National Maritime Center and can be substituted for NMC required testing. This is a non-credit NMU offering.

NMU is the state-approved School Bus Driver Training Agency for the central and western Upper Peninsula. The purpose of school bus safety instruction is to promote safe, efficient pupil transportation programs, using Michigan Department of Education approved curriculum.

With the popularity of motorcycle riding on the increase statewide and across the country this program offers riders of all skill levels some of the most comprehensive training available anywhere. All of our instructors are MSF certified rider coaches in addition to being experienced avid riders.

The Michigan Learning Channel is a relatively new statewide program from Michigan's PBS stations that offers high-quality distance learning resources to students, teachers, and families. This course will introduce the programming and content available on the platform, demonstrate how to accesses resources via television and on the website, and share MLC's plans to support learning initiatives throughout the school year, especially during out of school hours. 

The on-demand course is self-paced. You can register for it and complete it whenever is convenient for you. You will receive your SCECHs when you complete the course.

Northern Michigan University faculty have produced a series of free self-paced online educational modules on various topics related to the COVID-19 pandemic, ranging from scientific aspects to impacts to communities, businesses, and families.

For Educators

Adult students require programs that deliver results specific to their professional needs with course schedules and delivery methods that allow participation outside the traditional semester format. Continuing Education’s goal is to provide these vitally important lifelong learning opportunities to individuals and groups in the Upper Peninsula and beyond.
