Welding as a Hobby - Session II
Welding as a Hobby - Beginning - Intermediate
Whether you are a beginner or intermediate, this class is for you.
Welding as a hobby is a fun activity and a great way to tackle some of those DIY projects! This beginning/intermediate course is meant to show you the basics including safety, power sources, equipment set-up, general usage of oxygen acetylene cutting torches, arc welding and mig or wire feed welding along with plenty of time for practice, questions & answers. This class will start March 18, 2023 and meet every Saturday from 9 AM
until Noon for 6 weeks at NMU’s Jacobetti Complex.
The cost is $475 and includes instruction, equipment and all materials. Register today! Must meet an 8-person minimum. If you have your own welding hood, jacket, safety glasses or gloves, bring them with you. If you don't have these items, we will provide them for your use.

Grief Support Specialist
Grief Support Specialist Program
The Grief Support Specialist Program is a non-credit certificate program through Continuing Education and Workforce Development at NMU. This program evolved from the Grief Specialist Program at UW-Madison.
This program is 8 weeks and online with asynchronous and synchronous components. Two weekend sessions are included. The course involves detailed lectures/instruction, illustrative case studies and client stories, facilitated discussions and activities as well a project phase where participants can design a project of importance to their employer or for their own personal development.

All courses will be held via Zoom.
All these trainings are primarily for social workers and other workers, who work with diverse populations with specific needs. Situations that involve child protection, foster care/adoption, domestic violence, mental health concerns, addiction, and all sorts of disabilities and other challenges people face in their daily lives. The workshops will provide a better understanding of what workers face often, such as secondary trauma, compassion fatigue, burnout, working with a diverse population, etc. On the other end, the training will offer opportunities for participants to look at the latest research in those areas, and practice some techniques of self care to improve their overall wellbeing. Lastly, the webinar aims at providing a safe space for participants to tackle issues relating to relationships (with supervisors, among colleagues, with clients and their families). Developing a trusting and respectful relationship is the key and building block of a positive workplace environment. It is hoped that participants will learn and use some effective tools and strategies in fostering a positive relationship in both their personal and work life.

Bus Driver Safety
NMU is the state-approved School Bus Driver Training Agency for the central and western Upper Peninsula. The purpose of school bus safety instruction is to promote safe, efficient pupil transportation programs, using Michigan Department of Education approved curriculum.

Introduction to The Michigan Learning Channel -SCECH Opportunity
The Michigan Learning Channel is a relatively new statewide program from Michigan's PBS stations that offers high-quality distance learning resources to students, teachers, and families. This course will introduce the programming and content available on the platform, demonstrate how to accesses resources via television and on the website, and share MLC's plans to support learning initiatives throughout the school year, especially during out of school hours.
The on-demand course is self-paced. You can register for it and complete it whenever is convenient for you. You will receive your SCECHs when you complete the course.

Motorcycle Safety - 2023 Schedule will be available in March
With the popularity of motorcycle riding on the increase statewide and across the country this program offers riders of all skill levels some of the most comprehensive training available anywhere. All of our instructors are MSF certified rider coaches in addition to being experienced avid riders.
The Schedule for the 2023 season will be available in March 2023.
Registrations opens one month before a class start date.
Introduction to Welding Training at NMU!
POSTPONED: This two week training will be hands-on and taught by one of Northern Michigan University's certified Welding Instructors at the Jacobetti Complex Welding Lab starting in the Winter of 2022.
Training will include safety, power sources, equipment set-up including wire feeder, shielding glass, methods of transfer and electrode selection; equipment maintenance, welding with SMAW, solid wire, flux core, gas shielded flux core, troubleshooting common wire welding and finish welding problems burnback.
This training is FREE to eligible applicants through the Regional Innovation Talent Grant. To check eligibility, please complete the application here and return to CEWD.
