Continuing Education

The NMU Continuing Education and Workforce Development office provides opportunities for continuing your education in the areas of commercial driver's license (CDL), Real Estate Appraisal, school bus drivers, motorcycle safety, social work, test preparation, online certifications, online cannabis studies, and more. CEWD offers online and in-person training and testing opportunities.

The NMU CDL Truck Driving School has now been approved to offer CDL B

Northern Michigan University (NMU), Continuing Education & Workforce Development (CEWD) will provide up to 40 hours of instruction (Class/Range/OTR) in a straight truck that is fully insured, covering each student that is enrolled in the program. Classes will normally run 8 hours/day, Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM - 4:00 PM for 1 week.  The total cost of this program is $2,450 which includes the course, course materials, textbook and the use of the NMU straight truck for one State of Michigan CDL driver license test.

TIG - Welding as a Hobby - Beginners

This class is for anyone that wants to learn about TIG (Tungsten inert gas) welding.

This beginning hands-on class will delve into the fundamental principles and techniques of TIG welding under the guidance of an experienced instructor. Through a blend of interactive demonstrations and practical exercises, you will learn about TIG welding equipment, including power sources, torches, and shielding gas systems, working with different types of metals, hand-eye coordination and torch manipulation, welding positions with plenty of time for practice, questions & answers. This class will start May 1, 2024 and meet Wednesday’s from 6 PM – 9 PM for 6 weeks at NMU’s Jacobetti Complex.

The cost is $615 and includes instruction, equipment and all materials. Register today! Must meet an 8-person minimum. If you have your own welding hood, jacket, safety glasses or gloves, bring them with you. If you don't have these items, we will provide them for your use.

***IMPORTANT - If you have a pacemaker or similar item you MUST consult your doctor before enrolling. This is due to the high-frequency start that TIG welding utilizes to establish the arc.

Grief Support Specialist Program

The Grief Support Specialist Program is an online, 8 week, non-credit certificate program through Continuing Education and Workforce Development at NMU. This program evolved from the Grief Specialist Program at UW-Madison.

Participants will learn the principles and many practical tools and techniques to enhance their professional and personal life related to grief. 

Courses will be held via zoom on eight consecutive Mondays from 6:00pm-9:00pm EST, beginning on April 22, 2024

Attendance is required for all eight training sessions.

All courses will be held via Zoom unless otherwise noted. Free for students and $45 for others non MDHHS folks.

All these trainings are primarily for social workers and other workers, who work with diverse populations with specific needs. Situations that involve child protection, foster care/adoption, domestic violence, mental health concerns, addiction, and all sorts of disabilities and other challenges people face in their daily lives. The workshops will provide a better understanding of what workers face often, such as secondary trauma, compassion fatigue, burnout, working with a diverse population, etc. On the other end, the training will offer opportunities for participants to look at the latest research in those areas, and practice some techniques of self care to improve their overall wellbeing. Lastly, the webinar aims at providing a safe space for participants to tackle issues relating to relationships (with supervisors, among colleagues, with clients and their families). Developing a trusting and respectful relationship is the key and building block of a positive workplace environment. It is hoped that participants will learn and use some effective tools and strategies in fostering a positive relationship in both their personal and work life.

With the popularity of motorcycle riding on the increase statewide and across the country this program offers riders of all skill levels some of the most comprehensive training available anywhere. All of our instructors are MSF certified rider coaches in addition to being experienced avid riders.

NMU is the state-approved School Bus Driver Training Agency for the central and western Upper Peninsula. The purpose of school bus safety instruction is to promote safe, efficient pupil transportation programs, using Michigan Department of Education approved curriculum.

The NMU RBT training course is free and open to participants living in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan who are 18 years of age or older with a high school diploma.

This course will be open enrollment until August 1, 2023. Email conteduc@nmu.edu to register.

For those outside of the Upper Peninsula looking to take this course, cost is $150 for the training ONLY and $300 for training + initial competency assessment. To register, fill out this form and send to conteduc@nmu.edu.

NMU faculty have produced a series of free self-paced online educational modules on various topics related to the COVID-19 pandemic, ranging from scientific aspects to impacts to communities, businesses, and families. The Michigan Learning Channel is a relatively new statewide program from Michigan's PBS stations that offers high-quality distance learning resources to students, teachers, and families. This course will introduce the programming and content available on the platform, demonstrate how to accesses resources via television and on the website, and share MLC's plans to support learning initiatives throughout the school year, especially during out of school hours. 

The on-demand course is self-paced. You can register for it and complete it whenever is convenient for you. You will receive your SCECHs when you complete the course.
