Program Overview
The Registered Behavior Technician™ (RBT®) is a paraprofessional who practices under the close, ongoing supervision of a Board Certified assistant Behavior Analyst™ (BCaBA®), Board Certified Behavior Analyst™ (BCBA®), or Board Certified Behavior Analyst – Doctoral™ (BCBA-D®). The primary responsibility of an RBT® is to directly implement behavior-analytic services.
The NMU online Registered Behavior Technician training program is based on the RBT® 2nd Edition Task List and is designed to meet the 40-hour training requirement for RBT® certification. The program is offered independent of the BACB®. Completion of the online training will result in a certificate of completion which can be used towards the scheduling of an Initial Competency Assessment with a qualified behavior analyst and the RBT® certification exam application. After completion of the online training, participants will complete their competency assessment one of NMU’s qualified behavior analysts.
Environments employing RBTs include:
- Private family homes
- Residential group homes
- Private and state facilities providing behavioral and mental health services
- Nonprofit agencies, health and human services providers
- Private clinics
- Hospitals
- Behavioral in-patient crisis centers
- Schools as a paraprofessional in special or general education settings
This training is made possible through grant funding from the Michigan Health Endowment Fund
Course Details & Schedule
Minimum requirements for completion are the 40 training hours and accomplishment of the specified competencies for the course. There are two primary Trainer/Assessors and three assistants who will assist trainees throughout the duration of the training and conduct the competency assessments following completion.
The RBT® Training course provides a 50.75-hour behavior analytic training designed for trainees to meet the Behavior Analysis Certification Board’s (BACB)® RBT® requirements.

Eligibility
Participants must...
- be 18 years of age
- a resident of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan
- hold a high school diploma
- pass a background check

Cost & Registration
The NMU RBT training course is free and open to participants living in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan who are 18 years of age or older with a high school diploma.
This course will be open enrollment until August 1, 2023. Email conteduc@nmu.edu to register.

Instructors
Ashley Shayter, PhD, LBA, BCBA, CBIS
Primary Instructor
Dr. Ashley Shayter received her Masters degree in Behavior Analysis and Therapy and her Doctorate in Psychology from Southern Illinois University, Carbondale and has over a decade of experience providing services to adults and adolescents with brain injuries and other related disabilities/disorders. She is currently a Clinical Evaluator for the Behavior Health Center of Excellence (BHCOE) and a Co-Director of Emergent Behavior Consulting, LLC. Dr. Shayter has previously served as an Assistant Professor in Northern Michigan University’s Department of Psychological Science and Associate Director of the Behavior Education Assessment and Research (BEAR) Center.
Jacob Daar, PhD, LBA-MI, BCBA-D
Primary Instructor
Dr. Daar, of Marquette, received his bachelor's degrees in Psychology and Sociology at the University of South Florida, his M.A. in Applied Behavior Analysis at the University of South Florida, and his PhD in Rehabilitation Sciences from the Behavior Analysis and Therapy program at Southern Illinois University. Dr. Daar is an assistant professor in the Department of Psychological Sciences at Northern Michigan University. Dr. Daar is also the Director of the Behavior Education Assessment and Research (BEAR) Center and serves on the Michigan Autism Council as the University representative.
Mitchell Cox, B.S., BCaBA
Assistant Trainer & Assessor
Mitchell Cox received his undergraduate degree in neuroscience and psychology from Central Michigan University and is a Board Certified Assistant Behavior Analyst. His practical activities include providing in-clinic and home skill acquisition services for children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder and other related developmental/intellectual disabilities. Mitchell is currently pursuing his BCBA credentials through Northern Michigan University’s Applied Behavior Analysis Master’s Program.
Jordan Porter, B.S., BCaBA
Assistant Trainer & Assessor
Jordan Porter received his undergraduate degree from Northern Michigan University’s Applied Behavior Analysis program. He has experience in providing language acquisition services for children in clinical settings, and services with the aging population in residential settings. He is also a Graduate Assistant teaching Introduction to Psychology and Psychological Statistics. Jordan is currently pursuing his BCBA credentials through Northern Michigan University’s Applied Behavior Analysis Master’s program.
