Welcome from the Director
Dear Prospective Graduate Students,
Welcome to the Master of Science in Sustainability program at Northern Michigan University! We are thrilled that you are interested in this newly created program, which reflects our university’s growing commitment to sustainability education, innovation, and leadership.
This program was designed with flexibility and real-world impact in mind. You can choose from five tracks to match your academic interests: Natural Resources Management, Community Development & Planning, Sustainability Leadership, Spatial Data Science, or an Individualized Track.
Students also have the option to tailor their culminating experience--choosing between a traditional master’s thesis or a hands-on practicum--to align with their professional goals and learning preferences.
At Northern, you’ll engage in an interdisciplinary curriculum led by dedicated faculty who bring a wealth of academic knowledge, real-world experience, and passion to your graduate journey. Our faculty are deeply invested in your success and ready to support your academic and professional growth.
There is truly no better place to immerse yourself in the study of sustainability than Marquette, Michigan. Here, you’ll find a community that is not only aware of sustainability issues, but also actively engaged in developing solutions, from renewable energy initiatives to local food systems to climate resilience planning.
We look forward to the unique perspectives and contributions that each of you will bring to our program. Together, we will explore how to shape a more resilient and sustainable future.
