February 28, 2024

Makaylee Kuhn graduated in May 2023 with an Environmental Science major, a Sustainability minor, and a 4.0 average. In August 2023 she started a Master of Interdisciplinary Studies at NMU and is developing a project called NMU Green Athletics. Makaylee is collaborating with other student-athletes and NMU staff to develop a Sustainability Action Plan for NMU Athletics.

This is Makaylee’s final season playing on the NMU women’s basketball team. In January 2024 she became the team’s all-time scoring leader. At a home game in the Berry Events Center Makaylee broke the 33-year-old record of 1,699 points. She continues to rack up points, and in February was named the GLIAC’s Offensive Player of the Week. Calling all graduates from Summer 2020 through Winter 2023

February 28, 2024

If you are one of the EEGS majors who graduated between Summer 2020 and Winter 2023, then you are a star of this article! By now you have probably received multiple emails about the NMU Alumni Survey. As a graduate from the EEGS Department, your experiences and opinions are extremely important to us. Find your survey at www.nmu.edu/alumni-surveyThe survey should take about 10 minutes if you haven’t completed it already. Participants can enter to win an NMU swag bag! We extend our sincere thanks if you have already responded.

Through the process of conducting this third survey, we will learn how your time at NMU has prepared you for life after college. The EEGS Department values this information in part because it helps us recruit more wonderful students like you. We also consider the anonymous feedback as we refine and improve our programs so that our graduates are well prepared for the next steps of their journey.

We are grateful that you chose Northern, and we hope that you are well. Please complete the survey if you graduated within the three-year window. You taking action today will help us achieve the highest possible response rate, which will provide more representative data. Email us at eegs@nmu.edu if you have any questions about this request. Thank you.

NMU’s Eta Chi chapter of GTU recognized as 2023 Honors Chapter

February 28, 2024

NMU’s Eta Chi chapter of Gamma Theta Upsilon International Geographical Honor Society continues to be one of the most active chapters in the organization. Eta Chi earned a 2023 Honors Chapter Award for the myriad ways in which the group promoted geography. Thanks to strong student leaders and dozens of new members joining each year, Eta Chi organizes and hosts multiple events to benefit Northern students. The November graduate school panel featured very helpful advice from alumni and GTU members Olivia Czajka '21 (Environmental Studies and Sustainability) and Erin Matula '22 (Environmental Science).

In February 2024 current GTU co-leaders spent a morning with Environmental Science alumna Katy Robinson '20 to discuss resume advice and employment options after graduating. Katy also spoke with one of the senior capstone classes to share tips on applying for U.S. government positions. She shared how being a member of GTU, a certified honor society, helped her start at a higher salary when she accepted a position as a soil conservationist with the Natural Resources Conservation Service in Big Rapids, Michigan. While on campus Katy also met with anyone who wanted to discuss working in the field of environmental conservation, whether through the U.S. Department of Agriculture at NRCS or the U.S. Forest Service, or on the state or local level.

While visiting Marquette, Katy reflected, “NMU and the EEGS Department provided me with invaluable hands on skills, knowledge, and support that helped me grow as an individual as well as a professional. I cannot thank them enough for going above and beyond their duties to help students reach their goals and dreams.” The EEGS Department is grateful to Katy for volunteering to mentor current students, both informally and through the Alumni Mentor Program associated with Wildcats Connect—a partnership between the NMU Alumni Association and Career Services.

On March 14 GTU plans to host a career panel to help current students explore their options for future employment. GTU members are also preparing a suite of activities for the 10th annual Anderton’s Earth Week, April 21–27. They are compiling a calendar of events that organizations across campus will hold the last week of the semester to honor Planet Earth. Check Northern Today for updates later this spring.
