About Dr. Stock
Ryan Stock is a broadly trained energy geographer and political ecologist with expertise in renewable energy transitions and climate change interventions from an intersectional and decolonial perspective. As director of the Illume Lab, he maintains a global research program and collaborates with many scholars and students worldwide, recently investigating the following: antiracist and abolitionist solar interventions (USA); environmental injustices of solar electronic waste (India); gendered livelihoods and food security in relation to solar development (Ghana); land and energy dispossessions for solar parks (India); climate justice and farmer vulnerability (India); biopolitics and racializing assemblages of precision agriculture (USA). He has methodological expertise in mixed methods field research with a strength in qualitative approaches. He also has a strong and consistent record of peer-reviewed publications, editorial experience, organizing and presenting at academic conferences and student mentorship on research projects.
Core to his personal and professional identity is a normative commitment to equity and sustainability, threaded through all his work in academia and the community. For his campus leadership on sustainability and diversity, he was awarded NMU’s prestigious Faculty Emerging Leadership Award. Ryan is Vice Chair of the American Association of Geographers’ (AAG) Energy and Environment Specialty Group and serves on the AAG JEDI Committee and Climate Action Task Force. At NMU, he is the coordinator of the Northern Climate Network, an appointed member of the SHINE Board of Advisors, an appointed member of the President’s Committee on Diversity, an invited member of AAUP Committee I on diversity, equity and inclusion, as well as member of the Gender and Sexuality Studies Program Committee and the Undergrad Research Advisory Board. Ryan is faculty mentor of various student groups and member of committees for Masters theses and PhD dissertations, McNair Scholars and Freshman Fellows. In the community, Ryan is a member of the Marquette County Climate Adaptation Task Force, as well as an environmental and social justice activist. Ryan is also a former Fulbright Scholar and Peace Corps volunteer.
