Community

Imposter syndrome is the inability to internalize a sense of accomplishment, often leaving people feeling like a fraud, unworthy, incompetent, or undeserving which can become. The workshop will take the form of small group discussions exploring anonymous personal narratives surrounding experiencing, upholding, and disrupting imposter syndrome. We will explore the difference between internal feelings of validation and the feelings that come with being marginalized within an organization.

Dr. Romero is an immigrant, Latinx, non-binary scholar who has integrated LGBTQ+ and gender-non conforming identities into their language classroom. In their presentation, they will discuss some of the best and worst practices for scholars who wish to integrate these and other affirming practices in their pedagogical approach.

The UNITED Conference is Northern's day of diversity education. This conference is designed to bring both the NMU community and the greater Marquette community together to learn and dialogue around diversity, equity, & inclusion.

This year’s conference theme will be Writing Our Own Stories and will celebrate the 10th anniversary of NMU’s Diversity Common Reader Program. UNITED 2023 will feature workshops and presentations focused on self-authorship, diverse perspectives, and the voices of those often silenced. Programs will run from 8 am - 9 pm on Monday, March 20th.

Topics this year include social justice in athletics, fat studies, Implicit bias in the classroom, critical race theory, language deprivation, best practices in research for marginalized populations, and more!

In the decades following World War II, Michigan’s Upper Peninsula underwent economic, social, and environmental change. Deindustrialization, outmigration, and localized recession shaped economic realities of the region. In the wake of these economic changes, boosters, politicians, and local residents began to reimagine the future of the Upper Peninsula. Some hoped to restore the industrial economy. Others hoped to develop a tourist economy. Others yet hoped to protect and restore the local environments, championing the rhetoric of the burgeoning environmental movement. These debates revealed the complex political and social landscape of the Upper Peninsula.

Camden Burd is an assistant professor of history at Eastern Illinois University where he teaches courses on American, environmental, and public history. His research on the history of the Midwest has been published in multiple venues including The Michigan Historical Review as well as various edited collections focused on the history of the region.” Please include that snacks and refreshments will be provided at no charge.

The 2023 Great Lakes Cannabis Education Conference will take place on Tuesday, April 25th in the Northern Center at NMU.  

The region's first large-scale gathering for cannabis education

Hosted by Northern Michigan University and located on the shores of Lake Superior in beautiful Marquette, Michigan, this conference will showcase developing trends in cannabis education and scholarship, as well as insights from industry leaders and experts at the forefront of the sector’s evolving landscape. This first-of-its-kind annual conference series aims to inspire progress in cannabis education and scholarship through open dialogue, exchange of information and ideas, and celebration of student and faculty success.

Join the Department of Languages, Literatures and International Studies for an evening of poetry to celebrate the linguistic diversity of NMU! We are calling for presenters for Poetry without Borders: The event will be held on Thursday, February 23rd at 5:30 pm in the Northern Center's Peninsula II Room. 

Would you like to read or perform a poem during this event? The only rule is this: the poem needs to be in a language other than English. You can read in a language that you study, or one that you just love to read aloud.

Join us on Wednesday, February 22 at 7 p.m. Eastern for a virtual event as we welcome a panel of alumni to celebrate Black History Month! All working in various professions, these alumni will provide insight into how their education at NMU prepared them for their careers, discuss any obstacles they have overcome and share ways they impact the communities in which they live.

The event will be moderated by MarLanaysia Rosser, NMU’s Black Student Union president, and panelists include:

Your phone camera can capture a large amount of data and with a few steps, you can manipulate the data to your liking, not just the standard settings being used by the default software. In this workshop we will look at several tools that can nondestructively adjust that data, providing flexibility. Suggestions for making prints will also be discussed.

This talk will explore visuality of background scenery in the animation series Violet Evergarden produced by Kyoto Animation and released in 2018-20, based on the 2015-16 novel of the same title by Kana Akatsuki.  After discussing how sexuality is significantly subdued in its visual elements of characters and narrative expressions, in contrast to popular features of Japanese animation, including KyoAni’s other works, Dr. Mitsutoshi Oba will argue how the highly detailed and thoroughly naturalistic landscapes in the background of Violet Evergarden evoke emotions, spirituality, and even sexuality.  Various styles and movements in landscape paintings in history will be examined. Dr. Oba will correlate four seemingly disparate terms representing three explicit themes of the animation series and one implicit: letter, doll, war, and vista, to approach its central theme, which could be defined as semiology of "aishiteru."
