*Kymberly obtained her bachelor’s degree in psychology from Northern Michigan University. She has been a licensed attorney for nearly 20 years and focuses her practice exclusively on criminal defense and family law.

During this talk, Kymberly will discuss how the application of the psychological principles that you are learning today impact real people in real cases, including how police use deception and coercion in their investigations , the art of jury selection, and why good people do dumb things.

Community History Workshop

October 15 and 30, 11am to 4pm in the NMU Archives

If you have history with the UP or NMU, the Archives invites you to donate old photos, diaries, genealogical documents, and any other contribution to their archival collections. There will also be a chance to record your oral history of immigration stories, how family settled here, experiences at NMU, and more. This event is open to students, community members, faculty, staff, and alumni of the university.

Curious about NMU's oldest student organizations? Do you want to opportunity to read NMU's oldest yearbooks?

Organization leaders are encouraged to attend this Skill Builder workshop. Executive members of organizations are trained in the importance of keeping records and passing the information to the organization's next members. This workshop will also highlight how to donate materials to the archives.

After the seminar, there will be an open house where you can read old archival documents of the university's oldest organizations such as the Black Student Union. Snacks and refreshments will be provided!

Entrepreneurs Panel Discussion: Oct. 13

Northern Now: Alumni Entrepreneurs Panel on Oct. 13 at 7 p.m. Eastern

Join us on Wednesday, October 13 at 7 p.m. Eastern as we welcome a panel of alumni entrepreneurs to discuss the process of launching and running a successful business. Alumni Relations is teaming up with Invent@NMU to feature its clients and mentors in an array of industries, from a creative marketing agency to an online marketplace for medical professionals. Panelists include:

  • Joe Thiel ‘03, CEO at Innovate Marquette SmartZone and executive director of Invent@NMU
  • Ian Altobello ‘19, founder of The Boreal Collective, a creative marketing company that connects people to education, businesses to business, and talent to opportunity
  • Britta Carlson ‘12, CEO and founder of Med Pros Share, an online marketplace for therapists and other licensed medical professionals to sell their resources, as well as search and buy other medical professionals resources

Corinne Bodeman, NMU instructor of entrepreneurship and management for the College of Business, will moderate the event and share audience questions LIVE with the panelists. The event is free and registration is required. Once you register, you will receive the link to the live stream.

The Seventh Fire: A Decolonizing Experience

Thanks to funds in part by the Michigan Humanities Council, The Beaumier U.P. Center in excited to announce its upcoming exhibit, The Seventh Fire: A Decolonizing Experience. This multi-media display features contemporary Anishinaabe life and the liberty that decolonizing brings to modern society.

Our location is in Gries Hall on campus across from the Hedgecock building. Complimentary snacks and refreshments will be available upon the opening date. Free admission.

Wildcat Fun Run: Homecoming

Wildcat Fun Run 2021

The NMU Alumni Association is excited to bring back the Wildcat Fun Run to Homecoming! This year, we are hosting a virtual and in-person 5K for the NMU community to show their Wildcat pride…near and far!

Registration is required. The cost is $25 for the NMU community (alumni, friends, parents, community members) and includes a Wildcat Fun Run t-shirt. Northern Michigan University will use a portion of the revenue generated by registrations for the event to support the NMU Food Pantry. NMU students can register for $15 (price includes a t-shirt) and student status will be verified at registration.

In-Person Fun Run Participants:
The in-person Fun Run will take place on Saturday, Oct. 2, on NMU’s campus, beginning and ending in the Academic Mall near the Wildcat Statue. Check-in begins at 8 a.m. where participants will receive a Wildcat Fun Run t-shirt and a bib number. The Fun Run begins at 8:30 a.m. and alumni, students, and the NMU community are welcome to run, walk or jog the 5K course. Water and a small snack will be provided for participants at the end of the run.

Virtual Fun Run Participants:
Participants can complete the 5K through Saturday, Oct. 9. Once each participant completes the race, they will send a photo to alumni@nmu.edu to be entered into a drawing to win a prize and be featured on our NMU Alumni Association social media channels. A t-shirt will be mailed to you.

We are excited to bring back a Wildcat tradition and celebrate Homecoming 2021 both in-person and virtually with our NMU alumni and friends. #alwaysNMU #GoCats

NMU Wildpups Monday, September 27 from 12:30pm to 2:30pm

The Wildpups are back! Be a part of a study to help the new Animal Assisted Therapy program. If you miss your family's dog or need a way to destress, the Wildpups are here to help. Students and faculty are welcome to enjoy time with these licensed therapy dogs. There will also be a volunteer opportunity welcome for anyone to participate in research to help grow the field of Animal Assisted Therapy. Surveys will be available to fill out at the event, and those who participate are entered into a drawing to win an Amazon gift card! There is no limit to registration and everyone is welcome.
