Discussions: Diversity Common Reader Program

Community

Northern Michigan University's annual Diversity Common Reader Program (DCRP) revolves around a nonfiction book of interdisciplinary interest that advances discussions of diversity, inclusion and justice. This year's selection is Ta-Nehisi Coates' Between the World and Me, and the DCRP is planning three informal discussions, each focused on a section of the book, for NMU students, faculty, staff, alumni and friends. The sessions are Dec. 15, Dec. 29, and Jan. 12.

The book is available free to NMU students and can be found online or at a local bookstore for alumni and friends.

Registrants are encouraged to attend all three sessions, as each will focus on a different section of the book, however attendance at all sessions is not required to register.

Between the World and Me: In Conversation

DCRP logo

Community

The Diversity Common Reader Program, in collaboration with the NMU Theatre and Dance Department and North x North Coast, is proud to present a discussion of Ta-Nehisi Coates' Between the World and Me, a moving work of nonfiction that explores what it means to live in a black body in contemporary America. Between the World and Me folds trenchant social critique into an intimate letter addressed to the author's son, and is a singular and deeply compelling treatment of issues at the heart of the antiracist protests that have defined 2020.

This event is a panel discussion about the book moderated by Dr. Keenan Colquitt. Those who reserve tickets will receive a link to the virtual panel discussion 24 hours prior to the event.

Climate@Noon - The Color of Bunny

The color of bunny poster describes the event and provides the zoom link

Presenter:
Dr. Diana Lafferty, NMU-Biology / Wildlife Ecology & Conservation Science Lab

Presentation Overview:
Mismatch in seasonal coat color provides a striking visual metaphor for how climate change may affect Earth’s biodiversity. As such, snowshoe hare serve as an exciting ecological model for investigating the genetic basis for seasonal coat color change and for examining the morphological, physiological, and behavioral responses of a seasonal coat color changing species to ongoing climate change.

More about Dr. Lafferty:
As the director of the Wildlife Ecology and Conservation Science (WECOS) Lab at Northern Michigan University, Dr. Lafferty synergizes her research, mentoring, teaching and extension efforts to maximize participation by diverse people in authentic science to advance our understanding of how wildlife populations–and their associated communities and ecosystems–respond to human-mediated global change. In this pursuit, Dr. Lafferty’s research is taxonomically (American black bear, brown bear, Japanese wild boar, snowshoe hare) and geographically (Alaska, Michigan, North Carolina, Japan) diverse. In addition, she often integrates macro and micro-ecological perspectives using a mix of natural history observations, field-based monitoring, myriad laboratory techniques, statistical modeling and bioinformatics analyses to answer ecological questions for the purpose of contributing to meaningful conservation outcomes.
