Students are invited to join NMU alumni to learn valuable networking tips and put them into practice during an interactive workshop! We'll begin with a brief "networking tips 101" session with NMU Career Services, followed by an opportunity to put what you've learned to the test. Students will experience three breakout sessions, pairing them up with NMU alumni and fellow students. During each session, students will have five to ten minutes to find commonalities when perhaps there aren’t obvious ones (like major, job, family background, etc.) and work to develop their personal and professional “elevator pitch”.

Join us on Wednesday, February 9 at 7 p.m. Eastern as we partner with the NMU Center for Rural Health and welcome a panel of experts to discuss the social determinants of health, which are the conditions and environments that affect a wide range of health, functioning, and quality-of-life outcomes and risks. Elise Bur, the director of the NMU Center for Rural Health, will moderate the conversation, focusing on some of the social determinants of health we experience in the U.P. The panelists will discuss the Community Health Worker profession, what impact they have on the health and well-being of individuals, and particularly how Community Health Workers are addressing food insecurity in our area, one of the social determinants of health.

Panelists include:

• Shannon Lijewski, NCHW, MBA, CHCEF, principal of Everyday Life Consulting, an agency that focuses on the development and training of Community Health Workers 
• Alazar “Zar” Chroman, a local Community Health Worker with UPHS/AdvantagePoint Health Alliance
• Sarah Monte ‘08, outreach director for Marquette Food Co-op and NMU alumna

Join us on Wednesday, January 12 at 7 p.m. Eastern as we “callback” a panel of alumni from the Theatre and Dance Department! All working in various areas of the industry, these alumni will provide insight on how their education at NMU prepared them for their careers, reminisce about the exciting projects they worked on during their time as a student, and share their plans for the future.

Panelists include:

• Michael Detroit ’85, executive producer of Playhouse on the Square, a 52-year-old non-profit professional resident theatre company located in Memphis, Tenn.
• Janel Rayome ’04, administrative director of Ballet Tech, a school of intensive classical dance training in New York City
• Kelly Moscinski ’07, ‘09 owner and head of casting at The Voicecaster, the first voiceover casting company in the country
• Travis Moscinski ’09, professional actor/voice actor and co-owner of The Voicecaster, an LA-based casting and recording studio

Bill Digneit ‘08, department head and co-director of NMU Theatre and Dance, and Jill Grundstrom ’04, ’20, assistant professor and co-director of NMU Theatre and Dance, will moderate the event and share audience questions LIVE with the artists. Back by popular demand! Join us on Wednesday, December 8 at 7 p.m. Eastern as we once again welcome Chef Alden Griffus CCC ’10, executive chef of Dining Services at Northern Michigan University, for a holiday cooking segment. Along with NMU Catering Manager Derek Estes ’19, Chef Alden will showcase holiday favorites from around the world, highlighting recipes rooted in various traditions.

Nick VanCourt ’04, co-founder and head brewer of Barrel + Beam, Andy Langlois ’95, co-founder and brewsician of Blackrocks Brewery, and Jake Shea ’08, lead brewer of Ore Dock Brewing Company, will chat about the brewing industry, what sets their breweries apart, and how their education at NMU has helped them in their endeavors.

Kylie Bunting ‘11, co-founder of Barley’s Angels U.P., the women’s craft beer education and appreciation group, will moderate the event and share audience questions LIVE with the panelists. Alumni Relations is teaming up with Invent@NMU to feature its clients and mentors in an array of industries, from a creative marketing agency to an online marketplace for medical professionals. Panelists include:

• Joe Thiel ‘03, CEO at Innovate Marquette SmartZone and executive director of Invent@NMU
• Ian Altobello ‘19, founder of The Boreal Collective, a creative marketing company that connects people to education, businesses to business, and talent to opportunity
• Britta Carlson ‘12, CEO and founder of Med Pros Share, an online marketplace for therapists and other licensed medical professionals to sell their resources, as well as search and buy other medical professionals resources

The main reason that Superior Edge is sweeping across the NMU campus is really quite simple. Participants can get recognized for the activities and endeavors they are active with both in- and out-of-the-classroom. There are four edges: Citizenship, Diversity, Leadership, and Real World. These edges each represent 100 hours of achievement in volunteerism, diversity awareness, leadership experience, and hands-on job experience. Join us to see how you can get started with this unique and innovative program.

Dallas St. Onge, a Superior Edge/Volunteer Center Coordinator, will be leading this orientation.

In this panel discussion event, university professors representing four different disciplines will share their perspectives on the January 6 assault on the U.S. capitol. Panelists include Dr. Jonathan Allen, political theory; Dr. Petra Hendrickson, international relations and comparative politics, Dr. Alan McEvoy, sociology, and Rebecca Mead, history. Each professor will provide a brief 10-12 minute presentation, followed by comments and questions from the audience. Dr. Carter Wilson, political science, will serve as host and moderator.

Join College of Health Sciences and Professional Studies Dean Dale Kapla ’90, 01 on Wednesday, April 21 at 6:30 p.m. Eastern for a virtual social for NMU Health Sciences and Professional Studies graduates. Alumni from the following schools and departments are invited to join: Clinical Sciences; Criminal Justice; Education, Leadership and Public Service; Engineering Technology; Health and Human Performance; Native American Studies; Nursing; and Social Work. 

Dr. Kapla will share new initiatives and other updates from the College of Health Sciences and Professional Studies. Following the update, alumni are invited to turn their cameras and microphones on to ask questions and connect with fellow Wildcats.
