Northern Now - Digital Event Series
Northern Now is a monthly, digital event series for alumni and friends hosted by the Northern Michigan University Alumni Association. Taking place on the second Wednesday of each month, the series provides a behind-the-scenes look at NMU students, departments, athletics, and more on campus with exclusive tours, interviews, and interactive events.

April 21: College of Health Sciences and Professional Studies Alumni Social
Join College of Health Sciences and Professional Studies Dean Dale Kapla ’90, 01 on Wednesday, April 21 at 6:30 p.m. Eastern for a virtual social for NMU Health Sciences and Professional Studies graduates.
Dr. Kapla will share new initiatives and other updates from the College of Health Sciences and Professional Studies. Following the update, alumni are invited to turn their cameras and microphones on to ask questions and connect with fellow Wildcats.
April 23: The Sam M. Cohodas Professorship Recognition Ceremony
Please join the Northern Michigan University leadership and campus community on Friday, April 23 at 1:00 p.m. Eastern for a virtual ceremony to recognize Dr. Gary Brunswick '84, recipient of the Sam M. Cohodas Professorship.
This ceremony honors the generosity of our donors and celebrates the academic and research excellence of Northern. Endowed professorships are the highest honor in academia bestowed upon a faculty member. Through the Sam M. Cohodas Professorship, we will strengthen efforts to recruit and retain the best faculty and further build upon Northern's intellectual community.
April 28: College of Technology and Occupational Sciences Alumni Social
Join Interim Dean Steve VandenAvond and faculty members from the College of Technology and Occupational Sciences on Wednesday, April 28 at 6:30 p.m. Eastern for a virtual social for NMU College of Technology and Occupational Sciences graduates.
Dr. VandenAvond will begin with opening remarks about the new vision for the College, followed by updates from Evan Lucas ‘11 on Construction Management, Kim Smith Kolasa ’95, ‘19 on Indoor Agriculture, and Loganne Glendening, CHE ’14, ‘16 on Hospitality Management. Department Head Dr. John Centko '94, '97 will cover additional programs within the College. Following the update, alumni are invited to turn their cameras and microphones on to ask questions and connect with fellow Wildcats.
May 12: Fireside with Fritz
Alumni are invited to join President Fritz Erickson for a fireside chat on Wednesday, May 12 at 7 p.m. Eastern. President Erickson will share campus updates, answer questions, and virtually connect with the Wildcat community. The event will begin with a welcome from NMU Alumni Association Board of Directors President Jan Haapala ’02.
Questions will be taken LIVE during the event via the Q&A function on Zoom.
May 26: Northern Now on U.P. History with Local Historians and Alumni
Join us on Wednesday, May 26 at 7 p.m. Eastern as we welcome alumni and local historians Barry James ‘92 and Troy Henderson ‘99. The pair will take the audience through time with a look at U.P. history, highlighting the Fayette Historic State Park on the Big Bay de Noc, the Michigan Iron Industry Museum in Negaunee, and the Fort Wilkins Historic State Park in Copper Harbor.
Early history of the U.P. and how people came here will be discussed during the presentation, followed by a live Q&A session facilitated by Susy Ziegler, NMU professor and department head of Earth, Environmental and Geographical Sciences and associate dean of the College of Arts & Sciences.
June 9: Northern Now Summer-Send Off Cooking Segment with Chef Alden Griffus
Back by popular demand! Join us on Wednesday, June 9 at 7 p.m. Eastern as we welcome Chef Alden Griffus CCC ’10, executive chef of Dining Services at Northern Michigan University, for a summer send-off cooking segment. For our last Northern Now of the semester, Chef Griffus will share her favorite summer recipes in time for the warm weather. Scott Bousson ’11, operations manager of Dining Services will also be joining Chef Griffus to share his take on the best recipes for the season.
Participants will receive the recipes ahead of time. Dianne Stone ’10, NMU events manager, will moderate the event and share audience questions LIVE with the chefs.
