The First Year Experience Survey (FYES) is now open and will close Friday, Oct. 2. Faculty and staff are asked to help promote the survey and encourage students to participate before it closes.

The FYES is a short, four-question survey designed to better understand the experiences of returning and non-returning students during their first year at NMU. Student feedback will help identify what went well, where students encountered challenges, and ways NMU can improve support for future first-year students.

Students invited to participate will receive a survey link by email. The survey takes approximately 5–10 minutes to complete, and participants will have the option to enter a drawing for Visa gift cards ranging from $25–$250.

Please encourage your students to check their email and complete the First Year Experience Survey by Oct. 2.

Institutional Effectiveness

Northern Michigan University is preparing for its upcoming Higher Learning Commission (HLC) reaffirmation of accreditation visit on Oct. 19–20.

During the visit, a team of HLC Peer Corps members will meet with members of the campus community and hold open and focused sessions to learn more about NMU's work and how the university meets students' educational needs.

Faculty, staff, and students are invited to participate in one or both upcoming practice forums. These mock sessions are an opportunity to get a feel for what it will be like to interact with HLC Peer Corps members and practice responding to the types of questions that may come up during the visit. No preparation is necessary, and all are welcome!

NMU and the Beginning College Survey of Student Engagement (BCSSE) are checking in with students. This semester, freshmen and new transfer students have a chance to be heard!

Each survey takes approximately 1 minute. Three check-in surveys will be available via individual email links for first-time full-time freshman and transfer students. The second survey will be available in October.

At NMU, we want everyone to fully realize their wellbeing, as whole people living in community and belonging with each other. That's why it's important to make your voice heard!  Northern Michigan University, in conjunction with the University of Michigan, is conducting a campus-wide survey about student and faculty/staff health and wellbeing called the Healthy Minds Survey. What NMU learns from this survey will be used to inform wellbeing policy, programs and services for the benefit of our campus community.

The survey will close on November 24th! 

Email invitations will be sent to those who qualify. Look for emails from healthyminds-NMU@umich.edu.  All responses are confidential and NMU is never provided your identity!

Institutional Effectiveness

Beginning March 10th, NMU will once again participate in the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE). The survey seeks to provide an estimate on how undergraduate students spend their time and what they gain from attending NMU. Freshmen and senior students, look for an email inviting you to complete the NSSE survey!

In appreciation for participating, students who complete the survey by April 11th will be entered into a drawing to win $10 in CatCa$h. Half (50%) of participants will win a prize. In addition, we will also enter completing students in a random drawing for 1 of 3 $100 Amazon gift cards, or 1 of 2 $250 Amazon gift cards. Your chances of winning depend on how many complete the survey; the last time we administered this survey about 523 students responded.
