What is NSSE?

NSSE (pronounced “nessie”) stands for the National Survey of Student Engagement. NSSE annually collects information at hundreds of four-year colleges and universities about first-year and senior students' participation in programs and activities that institutions provide for their learning and personal development. The results provide an estimate of how undergraduates spend their time and what they gain from attending college.

Northern is one of many institutions which participate in this national survey. Here are a few quick facts regarding NSSE:

  • Nearly 1,700 four-year colleges and universities have participated
  • 252,336 students responded to NSSE in 2022
  • Approximately 6.5 million students have completed the survey since 2000

Why should I complete NSSE?

NSSE is THE best chance for current students to voice their opinions of NMU. Only you know your experiences!

Is there an incentive to participate?

In appreciation for participating, students who complete the survey by April 11th will have a 50 percent chance to win $10 in CatCa$h. In addition, we will also enter completing students in a random drawing for 1 of 3 $100 Amazon gift cards, or 1 of 2 $250 Amazon gift cards. Your chances of winning depend on how many complete the survey; the last time we administered this survey about 523 students responded.

How can I participate?

Qualified students will begin receiving email invitations beginning Monday, March 10th, 2025.

The invitation schedule for qualifying first-year and senior students is as follows:

  • Email 1:  Monday, March 10th (First day NSSE 2025 begins)
  • Email 2:  Thursday, March 20th
  • Email 3:  Wednesday, March 26th

How long does it take to complete NSSE?

The survey takes about 10-15 minutes to complete.

Is NSSE confidential?

Information collected in NSSE is confidential, but not anonymous.

What happens after my survey response is submitted?

Upon survey close, results will be aggregated and compared with other universities and peer institutions across several metrics.

Most importantly, the aggregated survey responses have the ability to influence administration decisions and improve NMU's policies and programs.
