NMU Joins Bee Campus USA Program
Northern Michigan University has become an affiliate of the Bee Campus USA program, which provides a framework for campus communities to work together to conserve native pollinators by increasing the abundance of native plants, providing nest sites and reducing the use of pesticides. NMU Receives Carnegie Community Engagement Classification
Northern Michigan University is one of only 237 institutions nationwide selected to receive the 2026 Carnegie Elective Classification for Community Engagement from the American Council on Education and the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. (Northern Today, January 12, 2026)
Leach's Convocation Stresses Solid Footing and Bold Thinking
In his fall convocation, Northern Michigan University Interim President Gavin Leach celebrated faculty and staff achievements, along with the continuing overall enrollment growth and strong financial footing that have enabled the university to navigate the ever-changing higher education landscape more effectively than many other institutions. 1.1. Embed health into all aspects of campus culture, across the administration, operations and
academic mandates, and lead health promotion action and collaboration locally and globally,
guided by the Okanagan Charter.
1.2. Nurture Indigenous perspectives, programs, and peoples at NMU.
A major milestone was reached this month as the Strengthening Pathways North (SPN) Coordinator position was approved and posted publicly, marking a significant step in formalizing NMU's commitment to Native American student success. The team also finalized site visit plans, with visits to the University of Minnesota Morris and Montana State University-Northern scheduled for early summer 2026 to inform best practices.
1.3. Establish the NMU Opportunity and Empowerment Hub.
1.4. Embed sustainable values into all aspects of the University.
February brought two meaningful wins for NMU's sustainability work. The university secured Campus Compact membership, which opens the door to an AmeriCorps Vista position that will strengthen sustainability programming capacity. Additionally, the campus Sustainability Survey collected more than 1,100 responses, continuing a trend of growing environmental awareness that has been tracked since 2016.
2.1. Expand strategic work-based learning experiences that connect Wildcats and regional
employers and organizations.
The Career Chronicles project is on track, with the prototype nearing its March completion goal ahead of a Fall 2026 pilot launch. This tool will help students document and communicate their work-based learning experiences, strengthening the connection between classroom learning and career readiness.
2.2. Expand civic engagement and learning opportunities.
2.3. Develop the NMU Arts District & NMU Athletics District.
NMU's work on the Arts and Athletics District earned national recognition this month. The university was selected to present at the SCUP Annual Conference in Minneapolis (July 2026), where IE and Strategy 2.3 leadership will share how NMU transformed integrated planning from aspiration to practice through sustained collaboration between facilities teams and strategic planners.
2.4. Assess NMU's comprehensive impact on the Upper Peninsula.
The Regional Impact Assessment reached a significant visibility milestone this month, with preliminary findings presented at the February Board of Trustees retreat to a positive reception. The draft report is expected by late March 2026, and President Olsen hosted a direct conversation with the Strategy Team about next steps, reflecting strong institutional commitment to this work.
3.1. Create a culture in which High Impact Practices and Experiences (HIPEs) are utilized,
assessed, and promoted.
The HIPE Ambassador Program continues to thrive, sustaining participation at 34 students and exceeding its program goal. February also brought welcome leadership news, with Dr. Mark Shevy joining the team as co-Strategy Lead, bringing communications and media expertise that will support the strategy's growth and visibility going forward.
3.2. Optimize the NMU student success ecosystem.
The Student Success Ecosystem team made a thoughtful, strategic decision this month to pause development of the summer registration portal until NMU's CRM system selection is complete. This approach ensures that the portal is built on the right infrastructure from the start, setting the work up for long-term success rather than short-term workarounds.
3.3. Meet students' unique educational needs throughout their lifetime.
The Evergreen initiative is gearing up for a major moment, with its official launch set for March 17-18. Three national experts are confirmed to present, and President Olsen participated in an information session this month, signaling strong institutional support as NMU advances this student success initiative.
