AI can help you write faster, but it can also make you sound like everyone else. In a job market full of copy-paste “AI slop” resumes, this session shows you how to use AI the "right" way: as a tool to clarify your story, pull out real skills from your NMU experience, and build a resume that feels human, credible, and easy for recruiters to root for.

We’ll cover what a modern resume should look like today (paper + digital), how hiring is changing, and how to create a skills-forward resume that doesn’t just list what you did, but proves what you can do. You’ll also learn why employers are increasingly looking for better ways to validate skills, and how NMU’s investment in "Learning and Employment Records (LERs)" and tools like "SmartResume: helps you stay ahead of where hiring is headed.

You’ll walk away with:

  • A practical framework for turning NMU learning (classes, projects, jobs, leadership, life experience) into skills employers recognize.
  • AI prompts that produce *real you* results (not generic, over-polished fluff).
  • A clear understanding of how resumes are evolving and what recruiters actually scan for.

What is MySkills@NMU

NMU mySkills is a one-stop profile that helps you show your skills from classes, projects, and real experience—so you’re ready for the next era of hiring.

It takes everything you’ve done at NMU and beyond—coursework, certifications, internships, part-time jobs, leadership roles, volunteering, and life learning—and organizes it into a clear, easy-to-understand skills profile.

From there, you can generate a shareable SmartResume to use on Handshake and other job platforms, so you’re not rebuilding your resume from scratch every time you apply.

As you gain more experience, you just keep adding to it. The result is a living profile that helps employers quickly understand what you can do (with real evidence), and helps you feel more confident telling your story—whether you’re applying for your first internship or your first full-time role.

How It Works

  • Who is this for?
    • The mySkills@NMU and Bring It & Get Hired webinar series is designed for students and recent graduates who want to showcase their skills from classes, projects, internships, jobs, leadership, volunteering, and real experience in a way employers understand. It’s also helpful for anyone building a career-ready profile or navigating the modern hiring process.
  • Why you should join NMU MySkills?
    • NMU MySkills gives you a centralized skills profile where you can organize everything you’ve done—coursework, projects, experiences, badges, certifications—into a skills-forward format that is easier for employers to evaluate. From that profile you can build a shareable SmartResume and feel more confident telling your story in resumes and interviews. The webinar series teaches practical strategies to use these tools and improve your hiring outcomes.
  • Is it free?
    • Yes — mySkills@nmu, including access to create your skills profile and generate a SmartResume, is free for learners to use.
  • I can’t login to SmartResume
  • Where do I confirm my badge/credentials?
    • Digital badges earned through NMU are issued and stored in Credly. When NMU awards you a badge, you receive an email from Credly with a link to accept and view it. If you can’t find it, search your inbox for “Credly” or check your spam folder.
