Printing Services (University Marketing and Communications) and Mail Services (Purchasing) work closely to get the mail out - however we are in different departments.

University Mail Services processes all classes of U.S. Mail, sends parcels out through United Parcel Service (UPS) and FedEx, provides an intra campus mail service, and can apply postage to non-personal outgoing mail and process international mail. Mail and Warehouse Services 906-227-2749

Printing Services addresses and prepares thousands of mail pieces annually for both on-campus and external recipients. The majority of these mail pieces are NMU Admissions student-recruitment postcards and packets designed and produced by University Marketing and Communications.

Bulk Mailings

When mailing a large quantity of mail that is all the same, the USPS allows the sender to mail at reduced costs. Mail sent this way must include an appropriate permit on it in place of a stamp. For First-class mail the University has permit 70 for standard or bulk mail the permit is number is 54.

Permit 70

This permit is for at least 200 pieces of First-class mail. If 500 or more pieces are sent and the mail is presorted by zip code we can use a Presorted Permit 70 for a larger discount.

Permit 54

This permit is for bulk or standard mail of at least 200 pieces. All pieces must be identical and presorted. Northern Michigan University qualifies for nonprofit status with the USPS allowing us to send standard mail at very reduced rates. There are certain conditions that must be adhered to for mail to be sent with the nonprofit permit 54 stamp. Please contact us before designing your mailing so that we can get you the lowest cost for mailing.

Business Reply Mail

When requesting that a response be returned, you can either put a stamp on each piece to be returned or we can print a Business Reply Mail permit on the card or envelope. With Business Reply Mail you are charged only for those pieces that are returned to you through the mail. If Printing Services is designing your mail the correct permit will be included before printing.

Most of our paper stocks are available in a variety of colors, sizes and thickness. To request paper stock selection book call 906-227-2454 or email printing@nmu.edu.

Special order paper is available.

Paper for office copier

Please use our online ordering form to order paper for your office copier. For copiers that are contracted and serviced through Printing Services Copier Program, there is no charge for paper. For paper used in any other copier or fax machine (property of your department), please select the appropriate order selection so it is billed to your departmental account.

We will customize, lay out and print official Northern Michigan University letterhead, envelopes and business cards for you.

A choice of printing the NMU logo on the letterhead in color or black and white is available. While it’s encouraged that everyday and official correspondence be done on letterhead and envelopes with the color logo, black and white is an option for mass mailings with tight budgets.

Stationary Standards

University Stationery

NMU’s stationery includes its letterhead, envelopes and business cards. These items are the primary means of establishing the university image at the personal level. Functional and contemporary in appearance, Northern Michigan University stationery has been carefully created to be consistent with other applications of Northern Michigan University graphic identity program.

Use of the university’s stationery is permitted only for official business conducted by persons under contract in officially recognized divisions, schools, departments, centers or other units. University letterhead and envelopes must never be used for personal correspondence.
