Jessica Potvin
Assistant Professor
Jessica Potvin is a licensed clinical social worker. She is a mental health professional
with over 10 years of experience serving students, families, and communities across
Michigan’s Eastern Upper Peninsula. She earned her BSW from Northern Michigan
University in 2014 and her MSW at Michigan State University in 2015 with a clinical
focus and specialty in schools. Her career has been dedicated to school-based mental
health services. She truly believes in empowering individuals through education,
culturally responsive care, and community engagement.
In addition to her teaching and service work, Jessica is hoping to advance research in
the field of social work. She is particularly interested in exploring the intersection
between homelessness and human trafficking, with a focus on identifying risk factors
that influence vulnerability. Her goal is to contribute to evidence-based strategies that
not only prevent exploitation but also strengthen community support and rehabilitation
for survivors.
An alumna of Northern Michigan University, Jessica’s leadership training and
international fieldwork shaped her commitment to advancing the social work profession
and developing the next generation of Social Workers. She has been recognized with
multiple academic and service awards and is certified in specialized therapeutic
approaches including Eating Disorder Intuitive Therapy (EDIT). Jessica credits NMU’s
Student Leader Fellowship Program, as well as her notable BSW field experience
through NMU at Acres of Hope Orphanage in Uganda, for what has shaped her as a
leader and professional in the field.
Outside of her professional role, she finds joy in spending time with her family, boating
on the waters of the Upper Peninsula, golfing, and coaching youth sports.
