About the NMU Social Work Department

Our Vision

The Social Work Department will be recognized as an integral, mission-driven asset to NMU, our community (broadly-defined) and the social work profession because:

  • We deliver programs that are highly responsive to human services workforce trends and needs; and,
  • We (students, alumni, faculty and administrators) are proactive representatives of social work values in action.
Our Mission

To prepare competent professionals committed to advancing social justice, human rights and the dignity and worth of diverse individuals, groups, families, service delivery systems and communities through generalist social work practice in a global context.

Programs

Our programs provide students with an understanding of the contexts of social work practice, the changing nature of those contexts, the behavior of organizations, and the dynamics of change. Throughout the BSW and MSW curriculums, students will be exposed to the values and ethics that guide professional social work practice.  Further, MSW students will have the opportunity to specialize in clinical or macro social work, applying foundational skills, knowledge and values in specialized settings.
