The ASSIST Program
The mission of the ASSIST Program at Northern is to increase the retention and graduation rates of First-Generation, low-income students, and students with disabilities by providing a necessary support system and a broad range of individualized services.
Tutoring Services
ASSIST offers its own host of individualized tutoring services for participants, ranging from 24/7 virtual tutoring to in-person support from a Tutor Specialist. Students can submit the form below to request services.

ASSIST is located at 2101 C.B. Hedgcock next to Disability Services and Veteran Services within the Dean of Students Suite.
ASSIST is a TRIO Student Support Services program funded by the Department of Education with the mission of increasing the retention and graduation rates of First-Generation, low-income students, and students with disabilities, through a core mentorship with a dedicated advisor.

Eligibility
To be eligible for the ASSIST program, students must be enrolled at NMU, taking on-campus classes, maintain Good Academic Standing, and meet at least one of the following criteria:
- First-generation student (neither parent has earned a bachelor’s degree)
- Low-Income (based on Pell or TIP recipient status)
- Connected with Disability Services.
Services
ASSIST provides a wide array of services designed to support many aspects of a student's educational experience while attending NMU. Each student has an individual support plan that identifies necessary services to assist in meeting academic and personal goals.
Tutoring Services
ASSIST hosts a 24/7 virtual tutoring service, Tutor.com, and a series of Tutor Specialists to meet with students in person. We can also facilitate student study groups.
Students participating in the program can fill out the form below to request to be connected with a tutoring service.

Referral
Do you know a student who may be eligible and would benefit from our services?
If you would like to refer this student to the program, please select the “Referral” button to the left to submit a referral form. Once the referral form is complete, we automatically provide the student with an application. Upon receiving the student’s application, we will process it and notify the student of their status.
