Meet The Leadership
Karina Johnson, CO/LAB Dance Company Artistic Director & Choreographer
Welcome to the CO/LAB Dance Company’s annual showcase! As the Artistic Director of this beautiful company, I want to thank you for joining us tonight. We have such an incredible show for you, filled with energy, versatility, and passion. Our first act consists of faculty and student choreography, where their individuality shines. You are in for a special treat with the first piece; I am so pleased our department has been able to bring on Chris Houston as a new faculty this year. With his wealth of experience and incredibly creative choreographic process, he adds a great new dynamic to the company. The students have also created amazingly expressive and original pieces this year that I feel extremely proud to present on our stage.
Our second act will showcase my new work, Love is a Burning Thing. I’ve had a love for Johnny Cash since the beginning of my dance career. Every time I listen to his music, with his story-telling lyrics and lilting guitar, I see movement. And not just movement, but movement amongst lots of people, humans. His music is so human, so relatable, so touching. It has been a dream of mine to bring his music to life through dance, and here it is before you tonight. This is not a story of Johnny’s life; rather, I wanted to portray something deeper, something even more relatable, relevant, that stands the test of time. Something we all experience, no matter who you are or where you are from. The experiences we all have as humans, the interpersonal relationships we create and live, and the emotions we so strongly feel because of them. This is what I think about when I listen to Johnny sing, and this is what I want the audience to watch develop onstage and feel within themselves. I hope you can find small instances throughout the piece that remind you of something in your life… a young reckless love, an unbreakable friendship, a supportive community, a heartfelt loss. I hope as you watch you find appreciation for all things LIFE. That this life is what we have, that the relationships we create are what we should cherish and cling to, that nothing is more important.
Thank you again for joining us tonight for this unique and energetic show, now please sit back and enjoy the CO/LAB Dance Company!
