SN 101 is an introduction to the Spanish language and cultures of the people who speak it. Students learn rudimentary “survival” skills such as social pleasantries, shopping, exchanging money, eating in restaurants, talking about family, school and weather.

SN 102 is a continuation of SN 101. Students add to their proficiency in matters such as those related to health, free time, employment, travel and talking about the past cultures of the Hispanic world.

SN 201 reviews all grammar and major topics from SN 101 and 102. This course incorporates more reading, writing and conversation than first-year courses and explores more matters dealing with Hispanic cultures. Students expand their proficiency into areas such as expressing opinions and persuading.

SN 202 is a continuation of SN 201. Students do considerably more reading and writing than in prior courses. The course expands their cultural and linguistic proficiency.

In its “creative treatment of actuality” (Grieson), film selects, imagines, and re-considers stories to bring to light concerns about racial tensions, ethnicity, environmental problems, memory, identity, and gender and class divisions. This course offers, through the study of a selection of Latin American films from 2000 to the present, a multidisciplinary perspective of the social histories and contemporary lives of a diverse range of Latin American populations.

Apprentice work and activities that require students to use their knowledge of Spanish and develop their competency in the language. This includes such things as oral expression, appreciation of grammatical structure, proofreading and editing skills, research skills in Spanish and skills in teaching Spanish to others.

This course develops learner Spanish skills (reading, writing, speaking and listening) as an organic whole at the Advanced level. This course and its partner (SN 302: Advanced Spanish II) undertake a comprehensive review and expansion of the Spanish grammar system.

This course develops learner Spanish skills (reading, writing, speaking and listening) as an organic whole at the Advanced level. This course and its partner (SN 301: Advanced Spanish I) undertake a comprehensive review and expansion of the Spanish grammar system.

This course is a multidisciplinary introduction to the culture and civilization of Spain. It offers a comprehensive view of the historical, geographical, political and economic factors that have helped shape today’s Spanish society.

Students will learn about the culture of a particular country or countries through a combination of class sessions on the campus of Northern Michigan University and a faculty-led study abroad.

An introduction to the study and critical appreciation of poetry, prose, and drama from both Latin America and Spain.

This course will provide the opportunity to improve your reading, writing, and conversation skills in Spanish. We will read a variety of articles from Spanish and/or Latin American online newspapers and other sources. Topics range from current events (“the news”), politics, the arts, culture, sports, and every other realm of human endeavor. May be taken for credit more than once.
