Community Project Areas
Education
Faculty and students in EEGS have developed collaborative relationships with the Upper Peninsula Children's Museum to develop geography and environmental educational-themed programs and exhibits. At the same time, students gain exposure to the operations and challenges of operating non-profit organizations.
Natural resources
Faculty and students in EEGS have developed collaborative relationships with local non-profits and farms dedicated to conservation and management of water resources while also providing the community with recreational and educational opportunities as well as nutritious food. Students have gained exposure to forest mensuration techniques and the possibilities afforded by drones and have collected data that informs future land management decisions.
Sustainability
Faculty and students in EEGS have developed collaborative relationships with offices and facilities on the NMU campus and municipal entities in the Marquette community to develop plans that lay the foundation for a more sustainable future. Students have worked collaboratively to develop new plans for transitioning to more renewable sources of energy, shifting to more sustainable practices in the operations of the dining commons, and educating members of the community on the impacts of climate change.
