Recreational Sports

Grab your teammates and hit the court for a fun, competitive day of volleyball! Teams will consist of four players (minimum two female players on the court at all times). All skill levels are welcome—come ready to play hard and have fun!

Format

• Teams will be placed into pool play groups to guarantee multiple matches.

• After pool play, top teams advance to bracket play (single elimination).

• Each match will be one game to 21 points, capped at 25 (win by 2 unless capped).

• Rally scoring will be used for all matches.

• Teams will switch sides at 11 points.

• One time-out per team per game.

Rules

• Standard volleyball rules apply (USAV guidelines).

• Coed requirement: at least two female players on the court at all times.

• Teams must rotate positions and serve order consistently throughout the match.

• No open-handed tips; setting over the net must be clean (no doubles).

• Refereeing will be self-monitored during pool play, with officials present for bracket matches.

• Unsportsmanlike conduct may result in disqualification.

Extras

• Warm-up courts are available before matches.

• Music, prizes for winners, and great community vibes!

Boozhoo! Welcome to the Winter 2025 semester. 

On behalf of the NMU Center for Native American Studies, I am thrilled to announce that N8V Dance Fitness will return to NMU beginning Wednesday, January 22, 2025. All sessions are on Wednesdays and will be located in the DANCE STUDIO in the PEIF. We will have limited spots for a seated, modified version of the workout.

• The 11:00 am session is for NMU employees only per a suggestion from the Well Being committee.
• The 3:00 pm session is open to students and the community.

N8V Dance Fitness will be led by Michelle Reed (Ojibwe). Michelle is a well-respected powwow dancer across North America. Her fitness workshop is culturally inclusive and is open to everyone. Each week participants will have a chance to win a prize.

We are kicking off this year’s Be Well in Winter campaign with the outdoor Ice Rink Grand Opening behind the Northern Center on Saturday, February 1st from 5-8 PM. The event will feature a ribbon-cutting ceremony, food truck, complimentary hot chocolate bar, open skate, and prize drawings for students, including the chance to win a brand-new pair of skates! 

The rink will be open daily (volunteers and weather permitting), from 1:00pm to 4:00pm and 6:00pm to 9:00pm.

The United Way of Marquette County is once again honored to present the Detroit Redwings Alumni vs Marquette’s Yoopers United!

Marquette County Hockey Night will take place on Friday, September 13th at the Berry Events Center. The outdoor tailgate party will kick off a 3:30pm, doors open for the game at 5pm with pre-game events beginning at 6pm. The puck drops at 7pm for this thrilling night of Hockey!  Tickets are availabe at the NMU ticket office and online at tickets.nmu.edu. 

In 2022, at the inaugural event, the Marquette Yoopers United gave the Detroit Redwings Alumni quite the challenge when the game ended in a tie! Over 3,000 fans enjoyed the show where we raised over $100,000 for Marquette County non-profit organizations.

Each year, the United Way of Marquette County proudly partners with over 20 local non-profits to fund much needed programs, right here in Marquette County. In addition to our fundraising campaign, we are focused on matching volunteers with local needs, working together to create a stronger, healthier community.

The Upper Michigan Brain Tumor Center (UMBTC) is hosting our fourth annual golf event at noon on Thursday, September 19, 2024. The 4-person scramble will take place on the Greywalls course at Marquette golf club and will be broken into men's, women's, and mixed divisions. 

Please join us for a fun round of golf participating in on-course events (longest drive, closest to the pin, longest putt), dinner, and silent auction. Our hole-in-prize is valued at $20,000 and is a trip for two to Cape Wickham in Tasmania, Australia.
