Upper Peninsula Local Section Examination Announcement

The Upper Peninsula Section of the American Chemical Society (ACS) is proud to announce its participation in the U.S. National Chemistry Olympiad (USNCO) Local Section Examination. Northern Michigan University (NMU) will serve as one of the official examination sites.

The USNCO is a prestigious national program dedicated to promoting excellence in chemistry among high school students across the United States. This initiative aims to inspire interest in the chemical sciences, recognize outstanding academic achievement, and support educators and schools in nurturing student success in chemistry.

About the Local Examination
The USNCO Local Section Exam comprises 60 multiple-choice questions and is administered annually to over 16,000 students nationwide. Participants are encouraged to prepare using previously released exams available at www.acs.org/olympiad. All students must be registered with ACS to participate.

Recognition and Awards
• All participants will receive an official certificate of participation.
• Top-performing students will be eligible for cash awards.
• High-achieving students may advance to the national level of competition.

Advancement Opportunity
Students who excel at the national level may be selected to represent the United States at the International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO). Each year, a team of four students competes internationally, engaging in rigorous examinations and cultural exchanges with peers from around the world. Gold, silver, and bronze medals are awarded to outstanding performers.

Local Coordination
Professor Urvashi (uurvashi@nmu.edu) has been appointed as the USNCO Coordinator for the Upper Peninsula Section and will oversee local arrangements and registration.

We encourage schools across the Upper Peninsula to promote this prestigious opportunity and support student participation. The competition provides valuable academic recognition and an opportunity to celebrate excellence in chemistry.

For additional information and registration details, please get in touch with Professor Urvashi.
