sal ryman

Assistant Professor

sal ryman is an associate professor here at Northern Michigan University, teaching in both the Bachelor’s and Master’s of Social Work programs. They have a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and Russian from Bucknell University, a Master of Social Work degree from the University of Denver, and a PhD in Social Work from North Carolina A&T State University and the University of North Carolina Greensboro. 

Dr. sal enjoys teaching courses in program planning, policy, nonprofit management, and anti-oppressive practice. Their research interests center around health equity issues with a focus on gender identity and sexuality; adolescent self-determination; bioethics and informed consent; and systemic oppression, health policy, and long-term health outcomes for LGBTQ+ rural folk and people of color. Dr. sal is a member of the NMU Academic Senate’s General Education Council,  is secretary of NMU Allies, and sits on the program committee for the Gender and Sexuality Studies minor. Beyond service to the university, they are also part of Equality Michigan’s UP Coalition, addressing LGBTQ+ issues on the Upper Peninsula. In their spare time, they love to read, knit, watch TV, and go out for drinks with their awesome dog, Maxx.
