Clinical Laboratory Science Major: Concentration - Medical Laboratory Science

Traditional On-Campus Track or Online Track only through the NMU Global Campus

This major prepares graduates to perform a variety of laboratory assays on human and other types of specimens in clinical, research, commercial (biotechnology, pharmaceutical, etc.) and forensic laboratories to provide diagnostic information necessary to support health care, ensure quality control, facilitate product development and solve problems.

The program incorporates didactic and clinical education throughout the four-year curriculum. Students gain marketable skills after two years in the program through CLT certification. This concentration is a NAACLS accredited MLS program. Upon completion of the degree, students are eligible to take the national certification test: MLS(ASCP). The sophomore and senior practicum components provide an opportunity for students to experience two different clinical settings prior to graduation.

Enrollment eligibility is determined based on CLS advance placement criteria.

Clinical Health Science Major

The clinical health science degree is designed for certified clinical professionals with a minimum of an associate’s degree or equivalent, providing them with the desired baccalaureate degree needed for professional advancement. Radiography (RAD), surgical technology (ST) and respiratory therapy (RSP) and many other allied health professions are all currently at the associate’s degree level. This degree completes the general education requirements in any baccalaureate degree and complements this with relevant professional courses. A bachelor of science degree is preferred for positions such as supervisor or program director or to compete effectively in medical supply companies and equipment vendors. Many students and professionals in these fields seek a bachelor of science degree to aid in their transition to management or education positions within their fields. The clinical health science degree meets this need. There is a shortage of personnel in these health professions and it is likely that many potential bachelor degree candidates are already working in the field. Therefore this degree is designed to accommodate students who may be off-campus, practicing at a clinical site. The degree is designed to be flexible so that students can complete course work that supports their professional goals.

Pre-Physical Therapy

Advising for students interested in the pre-physical therapy program is done by Scott Drum in the School of Health and Human Performance.

Students interested in a career in physical therapy will need to complete graduate studies in physical therapy after completing a baccalaureate degree program at NMU. Similar to medical doctor training, physical therapy students must complete the Doctorate in Physical Therapy (DPT) degree program before they can become a licensed physical therapist.

While students may enroll in any baccalaureate degree program at NMU, there are specific prerequisite requirements for admission into DPT programs. Generally, these prerequisites include coursework in biology, chemistry, mathematics, physics, and psychology. At NMU, the pre-physical therapy adviser works with students to understand the specific requirements of the various DPT programs around the country and helps students tailor their baccalaureate degree with the appropriate prerequisite courses. Because of the overlap between the DPT program prerequisites and the NMU baccalaureate degrees in Sports Science or Biology, many students choose one of these majors.

An undergraduate education at NMU provides students with the level of rigor required for admission into a DPT program. In addition, NMU maintains an articulation agreement with Central Michigan University (CMU) to provide two non-competitive interviews for possible admission into the DPT program at CMU.

Nursing Major

This program combines the study of humanities and physical and behavioral sciences with professional nursing courses and clinical experience. Students are expected to demonstrate competency in critical thinking, communication and therapeutic nursing interventions when providing care for clients, families and communities. Graduates of the program are qualified to take the National Council for Licensure Exam (NCLEX-RN) and to apply for entrance to graduate programs in nursing.

The quality of our program demands excellence from our students. Success in the nursing profession is evidenced by competencies demonstrated across the curriculum. The presumption is that student nurses also demonstrate personal and academic integrity across the curriculum.  Conduct at any given time may call into question this premise. The requirements to continue in the program include remaining in good standing which requires: passing theory courses with a “C” or better, satisfactorily passing clinical courses and exhibiting professional behavior. Professional behavior is demonstrated by passing and maintaining the requirements for a negative criminal background check as well as professional competencies listed below.

Nursing students are required to demonstrate competencies in the following areas:

  1. Student demonstrates the professional standards of moral, ethical, and legal conduct; including protecting patient privacy and confidentiality of patient records and other privileged communications.
  2. Student assumes accountability for personal and professional behaviors.
  3. Student demonstrates professionalism, including attention to appearance, demeanor, respect for self and others, and attention to professional boundaries with patients and families as well as among caregivers.

Details regarding the oversight of these requirements can be found in the School of Nursing student handbook, available on the School of Nursing website.

Students majoring in nursing must maintain a minimum 2.25 NMU cumulative grade point average and must complete all nursing courses with a minimum grade of “C”, or “S” when the course is graded "S/U". Courses required for admission to the nursing program must be completed with a minimum grade of "C-".

Pre-Chiropractic Program

Advising for students interested in the pre-chripractic program is done by Dr. Erich Ottem, Biology Department, 906-227-1072; email: eottem@nmu.edu.

Northern Michigan University offers a pre-chiropractic program that follows the criteria established for admission to colleges of chiropractic whose programs are in compliance with the standards, rules and guidelines of the Council on Chiropractic Education. Normally, students must have completed at least 90 semester hours, with a cumulative grade point average of 2.50. Courses should be selected with the help of the pre-chiropractic adviser located in the Chemistry Department.

Pre-chiropractic students will not be taking all the courses listed.

For department information or additional degree requirements, go to the Pre-Professional Programs department page.

Individual state licensing boards may require additional education prior to entering a chiropractic college. Since entry requirements vary by state as well as by college, it is imperative that students interested in the pre-chiropractic program interact with the pre-chiropractic adviser early in their education and continue to do so throughout their academic career at NMU.
