The ASSIST Program at Northern Michigan University is an advising and support program, with the primary goals of increasing the retention and graduation rates of first generation and low income students and students with disabilities seeking their collegiate degree. The program achieves these goals through core mentorship with a dedicated advisor who is committed to providing a broad base of high-quality services by engaging students in an individualized learning environment within a continuous improvement process.

We work with dedicated students who have an academic need, maintaing Good Academic Standing and meet at least one of the following eligibility criteria:

  • You are a first generation college student where neither parent has earned a baccalaureate degree
  • You are from a low income household (determined by Pell or TIP status)
  • You are connected with Disability Services
  • Enrolled at NMU and taking on-campus classes

ASSIST is located at 2101 C.B. Hedgcock.

Students accepted into the program will meet with their advisor at least 3 times a semester. An individual support plan is developed each year to support advisees in meeting their specific academic and personal goals.

  • Exploration of academic majors and related careers
  • Assistance with the financial aid process and managing educational expenses
  • Graduate school exploration
  • Referral services
  • Student Advocacy
