Pursuant to Section 268 of the State School Aid Act, the Michigan Department of Civil Rights is required to submit an annual report to the legislature regarding the usage and cost of the North American Indian Tuition waiver.
A significant amount of the information required in the report is not accessible to the department without the assistance of your institution, therefore, the legislature has included supporting language in Section 268 (4) which reads, “A public university that receives funds under section 236 shall provide to the department of civil rights any information necessary for preparing the report detailed in subsection (3), using guidelines and procedures developed by the department of civil rights.”
Therefore, I am writing to request your assistance in providing our department with the data needed to comply with this legislative obligation. Specifically, we are requesting the following information for the previous academic year, 2017-2018:
The number of graduate and undergraduate North American Indian students enrolled each term, and
The number of North American Indian tuition waivers granted each term and the total monetary value of the waivers, and
The number of graduate and undergraduate students attending under a North American Indian tuition waiver who withdrew each term (which is defined as any student who was receiving the waiver but withdrew from the institution, regardless of future enrollment status), and
The number of graduate and undergraduate students attending under a North American Indian tuition waiver who successfully complete a degree or certificate program, separated by degree or certificate level, and the graduation rate for graduate and undergraduate students attending under the tuition waiver who completed a degree within 150% of the normal time to complete, separated by the level of the degree.
In order to comply with our mandated timeline, we are requesting this information no later than January 28, 2018. A template has been created for submitting the data, which is attached. Please submit via email to Melissa Kiesewetter: kiesewetterm@michigan.gov.
Please direct any questions to Melissa via email or by phone at 517-241-7748. Thank you in advance for your assistance.
