Student coaching at rock wall

If you’re passionate about sports, teamwork, and helping athletes reach their full potential, NMU’s Athletic Coaching Program is the perfect place to turn that passion into a career. Our program combines classroom learning, hands-on skill development, and real-world experience to prepare you for success as a coach in a variety of sports settings.

You’ll gain a strong foundation in athlete development, team management, sport officiating, and the science behind performance and fitness. Just as importantly, you’ll build the leadership, communication, and ethical decision-making skills that set great coaches apart.

Graduates of NMU’s SHHP Athletic Coaching Program are equipped to:

  • Lead with integrity and promote ethical coaching practices.
  • Build strong relationships with athletes, teams, and the community.
  • Foster safe, inclusive, and positive environments for all participants.
  • Plan and conduct effective practices and competitions.
  • Pursue continuous growth as a coach and lifelong learner.

Our curriculum is aligned with the Society of Health and Physical Educators (SHAPE) coaching standards, ensuring you’re prepared to meet the highest professional expectations:

  1. Develop and enact an athlete-centered coaching philosophy.
  2. Use long-term athlete development to enhance potential and encourage lifelong activity.
  3. Create a unified vision through strategic planning and goal setting.
  4. Align your program with all rules, regulations, and the unique needs of your athletes and community.
  5. Manage resources responsibly to support sustainable success.

Whether your goal is to coach youth sports, recreational sports, high school teams, collegiate teams or competitive athletics, NMU’s Athletic Coaching Program will help you build the knowledge, confidence, and connections to make a difference.
