OVERVIEW OF J-1 EXCHANGE PROGRAMS

All exchange semesters at Northern Michigan University begin with an official nomination from an international officer at your home university. Once your nomination has been accepted by NMU and you have received permission from your home university, you are ready to apply to one of our exchange programs.

J-1 SUPERIOR EXCHANGE STUDENTS (FEE WAIVED)

All exchange semesters begin with an official nomination from an international officer at your home university. Once your nomination has been accepted by NMU and you have received permission from your home school exchange officer, please follow the application steps below.  

All documents must be submitted through the home university international officer. NMU will not accept documents directly from a student.

  1. Fill out the Application for Superior Exchange Students
  2. Transcript - Send a transcript to Northern Michigan University.
  3. English Proficiency - TOEFL score of 61 iBT, 173 computer based or institutional TOEFL of 500 or higher, IELTS score of a 6, Duolingo score of 95 or higher. 
  4. Documentation of financial support and a copy of your passport must be provided prior to issuance of the DS-2019. Provide Certification of Finances in the amount of listed on the application documents for the current academic year.

J-1 SUPERIOR EXPERIENCE STUDENTS (FEE PAYING)

The Superior Experience Scholarship is available to students from partner universities who have an exchange relationship with NMU and have not been nominated for a fee-waived exchange semester. Students must be nominated through their home university and follow the application instructions below. Students can receive the scholarship for a maximum of one academic year. The scholarship is worth $2200 per semester.

All documents must be submitted through the home university international officer. NMU will not accept documents directly from a student.

  1. Fill out the Application for Superior Experience Students
  2. Transcript – Send a transcript (in English) to Northern Michigan University
  3. English Proficiency – TOEFL score of 61 iBT, 173 computer based or institutional TOEFL of 500 or higher, IELTS score of 6, Duolingo score of 95.
  4. Documentation of financial support and a copy of your passport must be provided prior to the issuance of the DS-2019. Provide the Certification of Finances in the amount of listed on the application documents for the current academic year.

Once you have been admitted as a non-degree student, you will receive your admissions letter and DS 2019. You will be sent a detailed e-mail of what your next steps are for example: How to select courses, set up your NMU e-mail account, register for housing and orientation etc.
