F-1 Student Visa

Students attending Northern Michigan University with the intention of seeking a degree must have a valid F-1 visa issued from NMU's International Programs Office. This includes all full-time undergraduate, graduate, and transfer students. A student must be fully admitted and have completed required immigration documentation before an F-1 visa will be issued. Canadian Citizens

Northern Michigan University welcomes our neighbors to the North! Canadian citizens attending Northern Michigan University with the intention of seeking a degree must have a valid F-1 visa issued from NMU's International Programs Office. This includes all full-time undergraduate, graduate, and transfer students. A student must be fully admitted and have completed required immigration documentation before an F-1 visa will be issued. We now offer a Canadian Bridge Award to academically talented undergraduate Canadian students. Learn more at the link below!

J-1 Exchange Visitor Visa

All exchange semesters at Northern Michigan University begin with an official nomination from an international officer at your home university. Once your nomination has been accepted by NMU and you have received permission from your home university, you are ready to apply to one of our exchange programs. All documents must be submitted through the home university international officer. NMU will not accept documents directly from a student.

Application Suggested Deadlines

NMU accepts applications all year round whenever they are sent. However, we recommend the following deadlines for international students. Please be aware that it can take a long time for some parts of the application to be completed. Make sure that you have time to send all of your application documents, receive your immigration documents (I-20), apply for your visa, and prepare your travel arrangements.
