Northern Michigan University is a proud supporter of the Marquette Area Sister City Partnership. The Marquette Area Sister Cities Partnership is a non-profit organization devoted to supporting and maintaining international relationships between the City of Marquette and its sister cities of Higashiōmi, Japan and Kajaani, Finland.

Marquette and Higashiōmi entered a formal Sister City friendship in 1979. Marquette and Kajaani entered a formal Sister City friendship in 1997. As part of the Sister City friendship with Higashiōmi, a student exchange was developed. Each year, one student from Higashiōmi studies at NMU and one student from NMU studies through Japan Center for Michigan Universities (JCMU) in Higashiōmi.

Embarking on a journey as a sister city ambassador during my time studying abroad at JCMU was an experience that transcended the traditional classroom setting. It offered me a unique opportunity to immerse myself not only in the Japanese language but also in its culture and community. Through engaging with locals, participating in cultural exchanges, and representing my home city, I gained invaluable insights and forged lasting connections that shaped my understanding of global citizenship. This adventure was not just about learning a language; it was about bridging cultures and creating memories that will last a lifetime.

“I am incredibly fortunate to have the opportunity to experience my sister city’s culture and people. Although I have only been here for one month, I have met so many great people and been to many beautiful places. I still can’t believe that I have 7 more months of this!”

My gratitude goes to JCMU and the sister-city relationship between Marquette and Higashi-Omi for creating an amazing opportunity for me to learn and explore Japan. Not only have I gained the ability to further my journey into Japanese fluency, but most importantly I created lasting relationships with many incredibly kind people along the way.
