What You’ll Do at NMU

The Mathematics and Computer Science Department at NMU offers programs in mathematics, computer science, and data science, including options in mobile and web app development and mathematics education. 

In our programs, you’ll have the opportunity to engage in research projects and explore emerging technologies in our specialty labs. You’ll work with robotics, the latest mathematical modeling tools, and programming platforms, with opportunities to develop projects ranging from video games to applications in artificial intelligence. 

Inside and outside the classroom, you’ll collaborate with faculty and peers to apply classroom concepts to real-world problems and projects. With small class sizes, you’ll build close relationships with experienced faculty who are dedicated to supporting both your academic success and your career beyond graduation.

Get Involved

As an NMU student, you’ll discover a wide range of opportunities to get involved on campus and in the community. You can compete against students from major universities around the world in the ACM North Central North American Regional Programming Contest, or join our student chapter of the Association for Computing Machinery to help plan and host the NMU Invitational Programming Contest. You can also join the Math Club and help plan and host the annual U.P. High School Math Challenge, serve as a math mentor, or spend Friday nights with fellow UNIX aficionados. You can also gain professional experience through internships with major companies such as Intel.

Whatever you choose, you’ll have the personal attention and support of dedicated faculty and staff every step of the way.
