Automatic membership in the NMU Retirees Association includes additional benefits and services as outlined below:
Identification Cards(ID): An NMU Retirees Association Card will be provided to retiree and spouse.
BENEFITS
Bookstore Discount: Retiree and spouse are entitled to receive a twenty percent (20%) discount on all books purchased and a ten percent (10%) discount on all other items purchased from the Northern Michigan University Bookstore. These discounts shall not apply to sale items or cap and gown rentals and purchases.
Tuition for NMU Course Offerings: Tuition is free on a space available basis for retirees and their spouse. Dependent children (son, stepson, daughter, stepdaughter, or a legally adopted child) are eligible for tuition scholarship benefits the same as dependent children of active employees as specified in the appropriate bargaining agreement or policy manual for the employee group to which the retiree belonged prior to retirement.
Campus Parking: One free parking decal is available, without charge, from Public Safety and Police Services upon request. The NMU Retirees Association Card is required for identification.
Complimentary Tickets to Dramatic Events (excluding musicals, operas, and certain fund-raising events): Retirees are eligible to receive two reserved seat tickets at no cost. Notification will be sent to retirees annually in the fall.
Tickets to Athletic Events: Retirees are eligible to receive two General Admission Season Tickets for the sports of basketball, football, and volleyball at no cost. Notification will be sent to retirees annually in the fall.
Internet Access: Recent NMU retirees retain their NMU network account (Internet access) and email address. The NMU Help Desk (227-2468) is available to retirees to ask general questions and to report apparent on-campus equipment and connectivity problems, but support unique to their home installation is not available. Former retirees without access should send a written request to Human Resources to take advantage of this benefit.
MISCELLANEOUS
Commencement: Retirees are welcome to attend Commencement ceremonies.
Secretarial Assistance for Publications and Research: Can be provided depending upon availability.
University Library: The Library is available, and the retirees and spouses are encouraged to use its services. Retirees and spouses must present their I.D. to be eligible for a courtesy card.
University Phone Directory: Directory is available upon request from the Office of Academic Affairs.
Use of Recreational Facilities: The PEIF and Superior Dome are available for recreational use to all retirees who purchase a Recreation Membership. Retirees may purchase a recreation membership at a reduced rate for themselves, their spouse, and children who are in high school and are fully supported by them. The cost of retiree membership shall be the same as the faculty/staff rate structure in effect at the time of purchase. Children of retirees who attend NMU as students may purchase a membership for a fee. Children past the age of high school must purchase a membership at the regular membership rate for non-staff people. Retirees may walk in the Dome at no charge during posted hours. Retirees desiring further information concerning recreational facilities should contact the Intercollegiate Athletics and Recreational Sports Office, PEIF 101A, or 227-2519.
