Conference And Guest Housing Policy

Conference And Guest Housing Policy     Revised September 2025

Policy:
Northern Michigan University’s Conference and Guest Housing is available to individuals affiliated with the University for an extended period of time, or to groups of individuals associated with a sponsoring organization. Availability is determined by Housing and Residence Life based on University operations and occupancy.

Applicability:
This policy applies to individuals affiliated with Northern Michigan University for a period of six weeks or longer during non-fall and non-winter semesters, and to groups associated with a sponsoring organization utilizing University facilities during the same periods. All guests must meet the minimum six-week stay requirement.

General:
This policy governs the authorized use of University housing facilities designated for conference and guest accommodations, as assigned by Housing and Residence Life. It does not apply to permanent or temporary student contract housing, except as otherwise specified.

Conference Housing:
Conference housing includes accommodations provided to groups or individuals participating in on-campus events such as conferences, seminars, workshops, training sessions, or similar activities. These events may or may not be sponsored by a University department but must involve the use of University facilities (e.g., conference rooms, classrooms, or athletic venues) under a contractual agreement. Youth camps and similar programs officially sponsored by the University—such as athletic, music, or academic programs—are also included under this category.

Guest Housing:
Guest housing applies to individuals or groups not participating in scheduled University functions but whose purpose for residence is directly related to University business, education, or activity. Guest housing is available only during non-fall and non-winter semesters, and requires a minimum stay of six weeks. Guest housing may be provided to:

● NMU students awaiting a move into residence halls between contract periods, enrolled in short-duration credit courses, or transitioning out of campus housing.

● College or high school students directly participating in activities held in University facilities such as the Superior Dome, Physical Education Instructional Facility, or Berry Events Center. Housing may include essential participants (e.g., athletes, coaches, cheerleaders, band members) but excludes parents and spectators.

● Individuals with a clearly defined association with the University for business, educational, or institutional purposes.

Policy Exceptions:
Exceptions to the above policy must be authorized by the Director of Housing and Residence Life.
