Voluntary Civic Engagement

Purpose:
To establish guidelines for faculty and staff acceptance or membership on a board, council, commission, etc. where such membership is at the volition of the faculty or staff member.

Applicability:
All Faculty and Staff.

Policy:
It is the Policy of Northern Michigan University to encourage employees to exercise their civic responsibilities. 

Faculty or staff accepting appointments to an outside board, council, or commission, etc. at their own volition are not considered representatives of the University. 

Such service must not conflict with the faculty or staff member's duties. 

Leave away from the University to participate must be taken as annual, personal, or unpaid leave and must be taken at the convenience of the University. 

The University will not assume any liability or provide indemnification related to such service.
